Most of the bigger farms are cut since they are bagging. Look on facebook for Johnny Painter ............. They let you hunt on their farms also. Can anyone in the Bradford, Potter, Tioga area update the hay and crop length reports.Dying to go, just need some eyes on because I am a LONG way away.
Thought I would report on my trip to Potter County, Pa for long range groundhog hunting. Took my second trip there, there first about July 1 and the latest this Tuesday with the goal to shoot the
I can report that in this county, reputed for about 100 years as the "Woodchuck" Capital of the U,S. I was looking only for areas where 800 add and up shots were possible.
The county and nearby NY counties were almost completely devoid of Groundhogs. They were not visible as road kill and 3 days of hard driving back roads produced on running hog near a wood burn pile.
The Coyotes that we all know have devastated our targets have done in some areas almost completely. I returned home late last night after well over 1700 mile trip and a big gas bill.
There will still be smaller fields on the east coast, particularly with beans, that will produce, mostly critters stepping out of the protection of the woods for a measured amount. Any hog traveling too far from the woods will leave a scent trail that the first coyote will follow and take him out.
I am devastated by the reality and wonder what good my well tuned wildcats are to me now. I likely will have to work harder to shoot much less distance, likely over beans.
I welcome hearing about your experiences and rate of chance over the last couple of years.
Been hunting in Dutchess county New York with a buddy of mine for 30 years for the last five years the woodchuck population has declined drastically I guess because of the coyotes just wondering if you knew of a good spot or county in New York state with a woodchuck population is better than what we’re dealing with now thank youThought I would report on my trip to Potter County, Pa for long range groundhog hunting.
