Potential 6-284 Project & 87 VMax

Hi all,
I would like some tried and proven advice on the 6-284 with 87grain or similar bullets.

At some point in the future I'm likely to stop F-Class competition and would like to turn by Nesika based target rifle onto a mid to long range varminter (e.g. 500 yards). I love ultra-flat shooting rifles; developed from having shot a 20BR for a few years. And I'm not new to wild cating (a lot of experiance with necking down & other operations etc).

I like the idea of 6-284 & the 87 Vmax based on a good BC (0.40) & lots of speed. And i'm not too bother about barrel life, after all its a varmint rifle!! and wont see a huge amount of life. 600 rounds of 6-284 should take 5 years to get though in my estimated ... the 20BR will take everything else within 400 yards (less if windy).

I would like members comments & experiance with the 87VMax in the 6-284. Or suggestions with other 'light-ish' bullets. Thanks!! Glen New Zealand

I'd consider the 95 Berger VLD with a BC of .486 over the .400 BC of the 87.

My 6-284 ten twist would run the VLD's at 3600.

Wasn't a "warm" weather load, however..... ;)

I run the 87 VMaxs and 88 Berger in 12 twists. I tend to use the slow powders (in no particular order) H 1000, H 870, VV 170, VV 165 with 29" + barrels. It is my most used cartridge. A suggestion tho,if you plan on getting the MOST of it get a LONG barrel 29+". Otherwise get a 243AI/6mmAI

I have had excellent results with 70gr. Nosler BT's, 87 gr VMAX's & 95gr. Berger VLD's. I will have to dig up the chrono sheets to give you accurate velocities. The powders were in no special order RL25, N550 & another two that escape me right now.

Thanks for your replys!!

I agree 87VMax and 95VLD are great bullets. I once shot 87V's in a 6BR I had setup for varmint's; this will of course be a lot!!! faster. And I shoot 96VLD's in a 6BR target rifle with amazing accuracy.

wc872, I would love to know the velocities you obtained.

Thanks

6brbb,

I had a 6mmAI 10 twist to shoot 87Vmax. I was using N160 and getting 3550 f/s. The 6 x 284 should get a little more. I had a 14 tw 6mmAI that ran 70 Blitzkings near 4000 f/s it was very flat shoot. I shoot 6BR and 6BRX now with 70 BK at 3500 and 3700 f/s.

6BRbb -

G'day on ya !

I really like the Sierra 6mm 85HPBTs.

These are " light-ish ' for 6mm.

There are " old school " in their design as live varmint bullets,
yes. However... Sierra 6mm 85HPBTs were MORE consistent on wt-per-box, than any other 6mm bullets I tried weighing.
This includes many custom 6mms, and the factory stuff.

Over 3 boxes I weighed all the bullets in, I only saw 2 different bullet weights in each box. This, opposed toother bullets which ran as-high-as 7 seperate nullet weights encountered
per box.

With the excess power a 6-284 can generate, the 85s still would arrive @ 500yd w/ respectable and useable energy.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Regards,

I've found exceptional accuracy with RL22 & 88gr FB Bergers & 87gr Vmax in both my 6mmAI & my 6-284 but feel that my 6-47L with 88 Bergers & H4350 gives up very little to the bigger cartridges.

87s seated to the base of the neck JUST fit the mag box on my Rem SA's. So that doesn't leave ANY room for chaseing lands(and you will) sooner or later.

Here are velocities that I averaged.
The following are with 95gr. Berger VLD's coated with Boron Nitride. Primers were Win. WLRM in all loads.
59.0 grs. Retumbo 3503 fps.
58.0 grs. Retumbo 3443 fps

56.0 grs. RL25 3318 fps
54.5 grs. RL25 3239 fps
53.0 grs. RL22 3345 fps

87 gr. Moly AMAX - Win. WLRM
49.5 grs. N550 2807 fps

70 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips
57.0 grs. RL22 3713 fps

I have some loads that were 4023 fps with the 70 gr BT's but cannot locate the data right now. None of these loads showed any signs of pressure in my rifle. "Your mileage my vary"

You need to correct your typo . 55grs of Re#17 didn't produce 3923 fps with the 95gr VLD .

Are you feeding these 1 at a time or using a box magazine.

Are you better off using a long action to build in this caliber?

All my 6 or 6.5-284's are on long actions, except one on a 40-X.

Sorry, missed your question before....

They feed fine from the magazine with no alterations or problems.
