Postal rates to Hornady for modified cases

Working for a large distributor across the upper Midwest, we of course have to have everything picked up.
FedEx from a business prospective is too expensive, compared to the service level we get from UPS.
As an employee, my discount is everything 10% above cost, and shipping I pay exact cost, less any handling fees, IF I wrap, and process the packages on my OWN time ( during breaks,, etc.)
I can not ship anything, even within the boundaries of my state, for less than $11-$14 . That same low-teens price will also get it within a couple hundred miles, but shipping even a light item ( 4-10 pounds) to either coast, would easily set me back $20.
We do take advantage of "SpeeDee" delivery, which runs MN, IA, ND SD, WI, and some what into IL, at a reduced cost ( $6-$11 average ) for average packages.
USPS flat rate is the cheapest, but for us does not help, because of size restrictions.
.
My experience with USPS has been less than stellar, we had two locations in town to ship from, but they closed one, and now you wait in line like the DMV, because of the volume they have to handle from the whole city coming to one location. Add in foreigners, who don't/wont learn English, and you could kill an hour easily trying to get one package out.
I have switched to printing postage online, and giving it to my carrier, who is usually crabby about doing anything that takes him away from his "normal" routine.

Very thankful for our little country P.O.

I take them chocolate pies from time to time so,there maybe some collusion?Back when one of the boys was still here (he's hired gun, math physics genius) working a contract....he was buying used $$ golf clubs off fleabay.

The PO guys know us,and would always want to open the obvious club pkgs and practice swing....son don't care,I think it's neat in this day N age of big biz and technology that small town PO rocks.

Depends on location, but the PO guys always advise me on whether to use the std shipping or the more $ expedited.Must have something to do with hubs and number of handoffs?I give them the pkg, they look at the addy, tell me which way is cheapest and ETA?

Lots of people have a preference of one provider over another--usually either because they have a relative working there and have the "inside scoop" or because of one bad experience with the other. Having shipped over 20,000 packages on ebay mostly USPS, I can say that they didn't loose a single one (domestic only). But sometimes they are slow.

Be aware that priority mail is often NOT 2 day (print the label and it will tell you) and express mail isn't always 1 day. I sold some thread gauges to a manufacturer in Ohio who needed them in a hurry and paid me an extra $40 to ship Express. Label printed out "Express Mail 2-day" and they got there in 4. At least USPS refunded my money and I refunded his. Pain in the rear though when a guy has a job waiting.

Generally, it is best to print out a bar coded label and affix it with lots of tape . Pick the least expensive option--none get lost. Save your money on insurance--claims are a pain--put the money in your pocket and use a little more tape. And then be patient.

A note on insurance: I tend to pass on sales where the seller states "postage and full insurance". If the seller needs to rely on insurance, I'm concerned they don't package well. If a package shows up damaged, the BUYER has to deal with the post office. I'd rather have a root canal. I want to buy from someone who packages well, addresses well, and takes full responsibility for getting it to me. I bought 1000 berger bullets from a forum member. He threw them in a flat rate box with some Styrofoam peanuts. By the time they got here they crushed the peanuts and knocked a hole in the box. 4 x 100 boxes were missing. I thought he would go to the post office--nope, I had to make several trips to the post office to get HIS refund. He didn't refund me until months later when he got the money back from the post office--and the post office held the 600 bullets than made it until the claim was settled. Never again. I'll buy bullets from retailers who have experience shipping them. If you're selling bullets or a barrel, stating "Well packaged and guaranteed to arrive undamaged" would get my business.

Look into the Sinclair Seating Depth Gauge. Similar to the Hornady (may even be cheaper) and you use your once fired cases to get the reading. Unless I'm missing something about the Sinclair tool?

UPS is the gold standard in the business world. If you are shipping something and want cheap service, then buy cheap service. It does not matter who the shipper is, if you ship cheapest way, you get cheap service.

Thats exactly opposite of the way usps works here. I am a fisherman so i buy lots of custom built fishing rods. The good shippers use usps in pvc pipe with glued on ends. I got one in one time (lots get broken) that had a hole broke in an end cap and clear tape over the hole to hold the rod in. I took it to the post office to get my $600 it was insured for and the original shipper had to make the claim- i couldnt do anything. Luckily that business is like the gun business and i had another one on the way as soon as the epoxy cured but out of the 15-20 claims ive had to do over the years the original shipper has to make the claim and it never gets paid no matter what happens. One builder even takes pics of the postman holding them showing no damage and he signs the tubes and they still wont pay when it shows up broken.

Dusty,
Clearly that is the way it should work. I pointed out that insurance was a contract between the shipper and the PO and I shouldn't be involved but they made me fill the paperwork and called me at every step. --Jerry
