post Christmas boredom here... tell me about 6 x 45?

kicking around a new caliber to fiddle with. maybe for the pd hunts when the 204 and 223 aren't holding the wind, but the 22-250 and 243 just seem like TOO much. savage bolt guns. don't want to change bolt face (grendel, tcu, etc.). need to spot my own shots. efficient, shoot all day, low recoil kinda thing. AND not wanting to outlay hundreds for dies and brass and ....

is there enough left on a savage small shank to set back a .243 to 6 x 45?

i feel better now.

If you're asking about the 6mm bullets on the .223 Rem. case then your idea about a 'set back' may not follow through. The case diameters of the .243 Win. will require that most of the chamber be cut off in order to cut the smaller diameter chamber featuring the .223 case. I'm not precisely sure that there is enough tenon length left for the new chamber and the threading.

that was my suspicion, and may not have been cost effective even with having a couple of .243 bbls laying around. i 'might' need a faster twist anyway for the slower fps.

edit. p.s. should have said 'rechamber'...

For several years I built 6x45 and 6x47 rifles, mostly for depredation hunting of members of the small antelope family, in Africa. Excellent accuracy, low recoil, good barrel life and easy to reload for. I still use a 6x47 when I shoot prairie dogs since the barrel has life left and it makes a good intermediate range hammer.

The Mini-Mausers and now the Howa small actions are well suited to this chamber.

I just did a remage 6x45 does a lot better than i expected, don't over look n-133 powder with 70 to 85 gr bullets, good speed along with accuracy. Painter

6x45, Shoots the 70gr TNT's around 3050 fps, 1.5 inch groups at 300 yds.

Cut-down .243 barrels will work good on AR platforms. Currently shooting a long-throated 6X45 1/9.75 twist with the 95gr Sierras @ 2810 fps from a 26" barrel bolt rifle. Sierra's recommendation is for 1/9 twist or faster. Shoots very competitive on the 600 yrd line (sling). Currently the best powder I've found is IMR-8208 for all bullet weights.

I have a 1/8 twist Brux 30" going to try when (if) this barrel ever quits shooting.

I have a 1/10 twist on an AR platform that shoots up to the 87 gr Hornady very well. 20" barrel so i don't get the velocities that I do with bolt rifled 26" barrel but it's good.

Very easy to make cartridge. Probably what the 556 military cartridge should have been.

I have a 6X45 Remington 700. 24" Shilen Select Match LV benchrest weight barrel. I also have a 6X45 Remington 700 with 22"#3b Bartlein Barrel 1-8 twist for a walking around varmint rifle.

The 6X45 is extremely accurate for some reason. I almost can't find a bad load for it.

6mm match bullets are plentiful and very accurate. I've run up to 105 grainers due to my 1X8 twist but velocity is really slow. Uses 223 brass with only a run through the sizer to make the neck 6mm. Powders are pretty much every one the 223 uses. Benchmark, IMR 8208, and CFE223 work for me. Barrel life is about forever since its so mild. Recoil is on par with same weight bullets in 223.

Should be the same results in an AR if you are converting one to 6X45. Only limit there is mag length. I can load long in my bolt gun.

The 95 grain Sierra SMK's are awesomely accurate in my heavy gun. I like the Sierra 85 HPBT in my light gun. 80 Bergers shoot great in both.

Its a fun round.

I have a pair of them that I built with used ppc barrels.

Both of them shoot great with a 58 grain Vmax or a 55 grain Ballistic Tip over Benchmark.

I run a 28" 12tw chamber in 6x45AI(own my PTG reamer) and it is an over-acheiver. Been to 700 yards with the Berger 80 gr. FB Varmint at 3100 fps it it never ceases to amaze..it's going out again tomorrow..

Its probably one of the easiest wildcats to do. Straight neck up and load. I had one with an 8” twist. It would push 95SMK’s at 2800 with excellent accuracy. It was fun to 800 yards or so. Someone else liked it so much he threw money at me until I sold it. I have another one on an L461 Sako. It does a great job on deer with 85 and 95 Partitions. It’s a really Easy and fun cartridge.

I don't think there will be enough shank left to rechamber/thread after removing the 243 chamber on that barrel.
I have built 7 6x45s to date, 3 AR15s and 4 savage builds.
Ive taken many deer/antelope with them from 80-388 yards with the 85g sierra and 90g nosler HBT.
For p-dogs/coyote the 55g varmageddon does the job every time.
A 1/9" twist will take care of 55-95g bullets, I have yet to run a bullet they have not liked.
My own Savage build has a 20", 3P, 1/9" tw bbl. Ive bought all my barrels pre chambered.
I can see anyone ever being unhappy with a 6x45.

What twist are you guys using for the 60 to 70s? Been toying with the idea for a new upper.
I'm shootin a BHW 1n10 24" barrel on my gas gun.
Swift 223 brass
70 gr ballistic tips varmint
26.9 gr IMR 4895
CCI450, 2940 avg velocity

Swift 223 brass
70 gr berger hp FB
27.5 W748
CCI450, 2990 avg velocity
I windowed front of magazine to accommodate longer seating depths as long as 2.375

Edit, if you guys got good 85 to 90 grain loads I'd like to hear them

glowing review... thanks.

Go with a 1/9 twist for everything. I have yet to have issues with the lighter bullets in mine. I've shot both the Nosler and Sierra 55gr without any issues. Those 55gr Sierra bullets are very accurate.

The best lighter bullet accuracy I've found yet is the 70gr Speer TNT's.
