possible to find a load in 10 rounds ?

so i have a new barrel on my rem 700 in 223 . iv found a load for my favorite 53 gr smk. but want to try 77 grain smk. i only shoot 300 yard but its a 1 in 7 twist and would like to find a load for the 77 grain bullets. probably not necessary I'm sure i could use 69 smk and be fine from 100-300 yards . 77 grain is kinda pricy at 20$ per 50 bullets . so whats some load developments that are used ? i load at home, at the range .… was kinda thinking id be best to just buy bulk 53 gr and 69 gr smk as i have to feed an ar15 as well , it also has a 1 in 7 twist barrel… sierra bullets are cheaper than berger , but lord i hate sorting bullets with a passion . but then again if that are in the lands i don't think it matters so much ..

Hot loads and peak velocities are less important at shorter ranges. I've gotten lucky a few times and found a good load in 10 rounds. I start near the minimum load recommended in a reliable manual, load three at that powder charge. Then I pick my highest charge a grain below the listed max for .223 Rem and load four at that charge. Then I load three more at the mid point. Shoot them for group sizes and pick the most accurate.

I prefer to take smaller charge steps and load five each at four powder charge levels. Once I find the most accurate charge level, then I try 3-4 OALs by varying the seating depth to find the most accurate one.

I have loaded for my years and just once found the load I was looking for in 10 rounds. I had a new .270 . I opened up the Sierra manual and picked the max load, (I know) for the bullet I had on hand. My first 5 shot group measured 3/4". My 2nd 5 shot group was just a little smaller. Best groups I have ever gotten out of a bone stock Rem.

If your rifle has a good barrel and has no problems try this. Load 1 case a couple of grains less than max shoot it at the target. Bump the charge weight .2 of a grain and shoot at the same POA. Keep loading and shooting and adding .2 of a grain each shot and you will see the POI change either up or down as you shoot when the shots level out and 3 or 4 hit at almost the height the average charge weight of those shots at the same height is a barrel node (this is your load if you choose to use it). If you continue to add to the charge weight the shots will change POI going the other direction till you get another node. Many people claim that you want the POI going up to the top for your load. I think either will work. Let the flames begin!! But Ive seen it work!

Im going to try that . Just have to load at home. I talked to a guy at the range while back , he said he starts looking for his load only 2 grains under max .. loads 2 grains under max and works up. Then plays with OAL..

Something I learned on this forum, which may help you achieve your goal... test your loads (charge weight, seating dpeth, etc) with two rounds only.
If the first two rounds don't group to your liking, then there's no need to send a third, fourth, or fifth.

I know this doesn't answer your question specifically, but it will significantly reduce the amount of components used up in load development.

Seams if always found my loads withing 1/2gr of max to 1/2gr over max. I usually will find something that shoots good in 20 with my ARs. I don't mess with seating depth though, I load t the 2.6 or so and call it good.

Not sure if your shooting in competition based on using a Rem 700? Sounds like your shooting mostly at the rifle range. If your a varmint hunter look at the Hornady bullets much cheaper than Sierra and explosive on critters. Available in most shooting supply stores. Horadady VMax bullets shoot small groups in my 6BR.

Dont shoot much comp. Most my shooting is at the local range. I do hunt when i have time.. iv never used hornady in this rifle . I have in my 308 and shot verry good ,better than the sierra
