Polishing a Rem. blue action

Can a blued Rem. 700 action be polished to match a s.s. barrel ? If so, how much trouble would this be?

Thanks

It can be done, but you'll need to stay ahead of the rust..
I did one of my XP-100's and then clear coated it, it's been a lot of years that way, and still looks like SS....

I have a friend who did this, and was bragging about how it didn't make any difference whether it was blued or not. I asked him when was the last time he had taken it out of the stock? The answer was never, and yep you guessed it, there was quite the pitting going on underneath. In an arid climate you can probably get away with it, in a humid environment probably not so easy. You will have to be vigilant of rust either way. Start with removing the trigger/safety components, then sand the blue off starting with 600 grit sand paper using a shoe polish motion and overlapping the surface as you go around the action. If you want a high polish use a buffing wheel with white compound. Most stainless barrels come from the barrel maker with a 300 grit polish.

Yes, they can be done but you'll need a lot of elbow grease to do it...
A buffer will do it quicker, but it can be done by hand, just go slow and overlap the last grit you used...
I have used Brownells oven baking SS clear finish with good results, and just as good with the Auto clear I use on the stocks.....

If I were you i would not bother polishing the action just take it to some one who does bead blasting and have the action and barrel both glass bead blasted. I have sand blasted several different barrels and actions some stainless some black oxide and some blued and when you blast them for about 5 min the steel all looks the same. it will save an eternity in sanding and the finish will be a perfect match.
