Please school me on neck sizing

I guess my last question didn't make sense...it's happened before.

I full length size my cases and bump the shoulders while decapping.

I want to neck size my cases afterwards, to get more uniform bullet seating/neck tension. I have gathered how to do this with a Redding type S die with a specific size bushing...right?

Do I have to use a die specific to my chambering or can I get away with using a die that is the same CALIBER as my chamber?

Dean, If your going to full length resizing without your die properly adjust to fit your chamber your probably overworking your brass. There's a couple of different ways you can go but I think if your going to full length size you'd be better served by first using a headspace gage this measurement enables you to not only properly adjust the shoulder bump but also helps to keeps you from overworking your brass. Then it's as simple as adjusting a Redding type "S" bushing full length die to match a fireformed brass that has only been necksized. Adjust the die down a little at a time until your brass measurement match the measurement of your headspace gage. Choose a bushing that measures.002 smaller then the measurement of one your brass with a bullet seated. I always keep a fireformed brass and a dummy round with a bullet seated for each of my barrels. This allows for quick reference when you need to readjust your dies. Hope you find this helpful.

I agree with RJ. Get a good type S full length sizer and save urself the step of neck sizing afterwards. There is a good article here inthe archives on brass preparation that can help and the people at sinclairs can help when ordering.

But nobody makes a bushing type die set for a 6.5 Creedmoor. And I only bump the shoulders that need to be bumped by measuring with a headspace guage and adjusting the Hornady die set.
