Please help to reduce types of powder that I need to buy....

OK guys

I am trying to minimise the types of powder I need to buy

here are my calibers: nothing fancy so rationalising is the word

223 - varmint
308 - range and tactical
6.5x55 - stalking antelope
9.3x62 - oversea large game hunting round
6BR - 300m prone shooting
6 Super LR - tactical matches up to 1000 yards

I like to fit reloader 17 in whenever possible to gain flatter tragetory without increase pressure

Any suggestions as to what best ?

Thanks

I would take a serious look at Varget. It will pretty much do the whole spectrum that you're loading for with pretty decent velocity & accuracy.

Thank you guys for your input

at the moment I am thinking of going

N540 for 223
R17 for 308, 9.3x62 and 6.5x55 plus 6BR and 6 SLR

or N540 for 223
Varget for 308, 9.3x62 and 6.5x55
xbr 8208 for 6BR and 6 SLR

so Reloader 17 seems to be the ideal choice

I've done a lot of work with Reloder 17 in 6BR with 105, 107 & 115 grain bullets. Although it just works with 105/107 bullets, it is really too slow. RL17 does work with 115 DTAC bullets and I got ~2928 from a 30" barrel but the accuracy was not as good as the 105 VLD Bergers I was also shooting at the time with no calculable or discernible ballistic benefit. ES/SD numbers were very good with CCI 450 primers.

Varget will definitely work, quite well, in both the 223 and 308.

I have seven 223's and all of them shoot varget extremely consistently with 50 and 55 grain bullets. My rifles range from a 20" model seven remington to a 26" heavy varmint custom with a Douglas barrel.

My 308, model 700 Remington also shoots Varget extremely well with 150 and 165 grain bullets.

Reloder 17 is tricky, I've tried it in .260 Rem., 6mm Rem., 6.5x47 Lapua, and .284 Win., and while I eventually got good results with all of them I found RL-17 hard to tune. I would not use it as one of my only powders. For the cartridges you mention, the combination of Varget and H4350 seem to be ideal. In contrast, finding good accurate loads with Varget and H4350 in any cartridge I've tried them on have been fairly easy.

i would take this one caliber at a time... get a couple of powders that might work for several calibers but load up one at a time and develope properly. dont get frustrated because one caliber doesn't like "powder x". Varget and RE 15 are probably good choices for some of the calibers listed but there is no "one" powder for all calibers.

on another note the sierra manual's accuracy load has almost always treated me well.

happy shooting - justin
