Plea for range support

Let me start by saying I have no official connection to the Shooting Complex, I'm just an enthusiastic guy trying to help. Your time in reading this is appreciated and any help is greatly appreciated.

This is a request for support of a fairly new publicly operated shooting facility. Clark County Nevada (Las Vegas) operates an outdoor range of several thousand acres that first opened in 2010. One can visit the Shooting Complex website and some videos are available on Youtube. Unfortunately local media coverage has not been helpful of late and in some cases I believe is negatively biased. Channel 8/CBS Vegas did a news piece and chose one of the rare rainy, cool, cloudy days to shoot video to use in it (by design according to many) thus depicting an empty and gloomy place for those with no first hand knowledge. That it was planned before the economic downturn but opened at its height was a function of funding already in place and no knowledge of the severity of the coming crash at the time. Not it's here and would be a travesty to lose it. The Clark County Shooting Complex should be a regional facility.

The reason for this plea is that due to the ammo shortage and the economic downturn (largely) it has not achieved its revenue projections and due to operating at a deficit its future may be in question. Participation is picking up somewhat of late due to increasing ammunition availability but the operating loss has been in the bulls eye of the country commissioners for some time. Obviously national elections and the results have severely limited needed supplies while increasing numbers of new shooters enter the sport. The complex has plans for 500 and 1,200 yard ranges which have not been built yet but great facilities are finished and available for use as listed below.

Currently the Clark County Shooting Park offers ranges for pistol, rifle, shotgun and archery. It has around 80 covered RV parking spots with utility hookups available for rental. It has pro-shops for all ranges and offers safety, hunter and other education programs. The pistol and rifle ranges open now offer well lighted, covered stations with concrete benches, movable very heavy seats, folding chair seats, Hornady rests, movable carpet surfaces, a wide and deep concrete flooring, professionally designed and built sustainable berms with annual maintenance, flush concrete target stand inserts in the ground from 3 to 200 yards. It is run from a central range master tower with a good PA system with more than adequate trained range safety officers present on both sides. Plenty of large, well maintained PVC target stands and heavy cardboard backers. It is a clean, safe, family friendly and properly run range using both professionals and volunteers, all trained. They don't hassle anyone but insure a safe range regardless of the experience level of the shooters and are always willing to provide help for those in need or desiring it.

A world class Skeet and Trap range, a world class sporting clays facility that became operational around Jan '13. This year saw the beginning of two very successful seasons for an open sight (no optics) Rimfire League. The first season saw 12 four man teams of mostly experienced shooters while the second season saw 15 five man teams with shooters of all ages, sexes and experience levels. Numerous husband/wife teams, several father/son and even family teams participated. Awards were given out at the end of both seasons. Last winter saw the complexs first Natinoal 3 Gun Competition and there are plans for more, both 3 Gun and other action shooting events.

There are hopes and plans for unlimited (optics allowed) rimfire competition, small bore centerfire and other competitions. Shotgun and archery ranges are excellent with the sporting clays course separate from the skeet and trap facility and using golf carts to get from one station to another. This is a well run shooting complex, run and staffed by enthusiastic, competent shooters who are passionate about keeping it open, improving and expanding it. But right now it needs publicity, advertising and just getting the word out to help insure its survival. Priced to insure its availability to all, it is in stark contrast to the numerous indoor ranges catering to domestic and foreign tourists with overly priced packages down near the strip. The Clark County Shooting Complex is publicly operated which is a rare and greatly needed venue nationwide. Like any other park, it depends on our citizens for its success. Unlike most parks and public facilities it is expected to at least break even or close to it. Changes are underway to increase efficiency and reduce costs but more participation is key. While the range has significant support on most days, more is needed to insure its survival.

If anyone can assist by getting the word out, coming to Vegas and using it, offering networking contacts, contacting county supervisors or shooting organizations to come and compete here that would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't cross the river into clark co.with my guns and AZ tags on the truck .
Its one of the most liberal anti gun counties in the state.

Brass,
I lived in Vegas and was there during the planning stages and attended almost all of the meetings for planning, of your new facility, and I know how much time and money went into the project and it certainly is a world class facility. Having just returned from Vegas where I just competed in the VFS Nationals and stayed with a friend that has been a shooter for years tell me about some of the issues that are preventing this beautiful range from being successfull, My friend is a shotgunner who has been competeing for years and was one of the people that used to run the skeet range at Nellis AFB. I was shocked when he told me that the County Parks and Rec has such idiotic policys that its driving shooters away from the facility.
The majority of shooters that participate in short range Benchrest load between matches at the range, and can't go there to even accomplish load development, Clark County prohibits loading at the range, so if you expect benchrest shooters to go there the policy needs to change. Next when a match is held the match director usually provides a target crew and scorers and a range officer, in Clark county if they could be utilized they have to be employees of the county with minimum wage and benefits, thats never gonna work! I saved this last for you, my friend was shooting a round of skeet and after he came off of station 1 he rested his shotgun barrel on his shoe where he has one of the muzzle protectors laced into his shoe, the guy doing the pulling told him you can't do that here and if you continue I will ask you to leave! Steve Carmichael is the head of the range and I know that he is well versed in what can and can't be done on a shotgun range , but his hands are tied as the County doesn't know what they are doing to run this facility properly even when told by the experts that they have hired.
The County is now looking for someone to take over the facility because they can't figure out how to run it and make a profit. I would wager that none of the County officials have visted the very successful Ben Avery Facility to see if the business plan there would work for Vegas, so I would say until something changes your facility is going to continue to fail. It is totally amusing to read your post about down turns and econoics and ammo shortages, when just a few months ago I was at the Ben Avery facility in Phoenix and the place is jammed every single day, and their economy was just as severly impacted as Las Vegas was, so you tell me where you think the problem really is?
When I come to Vegas I would love to go out and do some load development but can't and the guy that preceeded Steve C used to run the Ben Avery Facility and at one time had a committment from Lester Bruno that Lester would come over and put on a couple of Benchrest matches per year, that can never happen if you can't load at the range!
