Playing with the Borescope and

Was fooling around with a sizing die tonight and decided it would be a good idea to stick the borescope it there to look around. I'm not sure I would recommend anyone do this. I started with a 6.5 die and it had a "carbon" ring at the side wall to shoulder junction. I'm sure it must be sizing lube but it looks just like a carbon ring in a barrel.

Well I tried everything to get it out and it is tough to get out of there. There must be something that will dissolve it if it is case lube but I have tried about every solvent cleaner I have and a little JB bore cleaner. It is just about all gone but I have it soaking in some Ed's Red overnight to see what that does to the little bit of residue left. Soap and water might even work but I didn't try that.

Moved on to a .223 die and it looked almost as bad it had what looked like thin case lube I do use alcohol and lanolin with that die but it also had a lot of brass chips up above the case neck line. Anyway it cleaned out pretty easily so that one is ready to go.

So you think your dies are clean? Well...

I’ve noticed the same accumulation... fortunately, it had not yet hardened and was easily removed!

I always clean my dies every few hundred cases. A bit of regular maintenance goes a long ways.
I thought I was keeping mine clean and that was really the surprise when I used the borescope on it. Looking in from the end didn't show the build up it looked clean and shiny. My regular maintenance just changed going forward I'll be cleaning a little differently than I have in the past. A nylon brush the correct size for the die bore will likely be used as needed along with scoping it to ensure that it is "really" clean.

In the past I sprayed gun cleaner in it and wiped it out with a paper towel, looked clean so good to go.

The neck shoulder junction of the die can be rough and pickup brass and anything squeezed upward during sizing.

You can smooth and polish the die with a snug fitting cleaning mop using J&B Bore paste and a drill. Just remember to apply pressure when the mop contacts the shoulder of the die. This will clean up the problem area at the neck shoulder junction of the die.

That is pretty much what I was trying last night without the drill. I may go back to that tonight to polish it out a little bit.

If your borescope shows brass at the neck shoulder junction a strong copper cleaner will remove it. If your bore cleaner when you sniff it curls your nose hairs and makes your eyes water it will remove brass.

There was no brass or copper in the neck shoulder area it was only above the case month on the 223 die. A little Bore Teck Eliminator and that wiped right out. The black ring at the case wall to shoulder area is where I had problems.

A borescope, particularly one with a very good image like the Teslong, can be the best and worst investment you can make.

The good, to be able to see inside things, such as rifle barrels, and see what's all going on inside them.

The bad, the fact you can see inside them and what you see can sometimes drive you freakin crazy to the point you were almost better off not knowing what things looked in there.
