Pitting on the bolt face?

I am looking at a 700 for the action to build a 6mm something and the bolt face shows some pitting around the firing pin hole as if gas leaked from around the primers and pitted it. How much of a concern is this and should anything be done about it? Thanks, VooDoo

As long as it's going to be re-barreled, the gunsmith can face-off the pitting, or you may want to consider getting the firing pin hole bushed. That could have led to the original problem that created the pitting: blown/ruptured primers. Bushing the bolt face would prevent any future problems with the new 6mm barrel/cartridge.

I have seen some nasty bolts shoot really well. I started looking at other bolts at the last match after I noticed the pitting on mine. Consensus is don't worry till it gets really nasty or till it effects the way it shoots? Or if you just don't like it, do as previous poster suggested.

Thanks for the replys, this rifle has a serial number with no letter prefix so I'm thinking it was made in the late sixties or early seventies anyway so it seems a little pitting isn't out of line for it.

It still would not be a bad idea to send the bolt to Greg Tannel for bushing. He threads in the bushing and turns down the firing pin end. Not only does it provide for greater pressure tolerance but guides the firing pin during its full excursion.

I just had this done at Gre Tan in the last month or so. The price was $64 for the bushing of the pin and the replacement of the complete firing pin assy was $65. He turns the bolt around quickly. Mine came back 7 days from the time I shipped it.
I called a few days ago about another bolt and the bushing job has gone up to $84. That includes shipping.

How about the light weight firing pin option, worth doing or not? And on another rifle with no need for bushing the pin hole, does the light weight firing pin fit "tighter" than original?
