pistol grip tape?

I'm building a Rem 222 rifle. Using a Rem 722 action, McGowan Remage 26" heavy SS barrel, Pillar & epoxy bedded, free floated. With a colorful laminated target type stock.
I do not want to checker or stipple the handgrip area but want to use some form of grip enhancing tape of some sort. Skateboard tape is too rough & sharp for my taste. Any suggestions on what I could use?

Cut a piece from a bicycle inner tube and stretch it over the grip area. I use it on a couple of my longbows that do not have a handle (riser) wrap.

Edit: Your local bicycle shop will give a damaged inner tube to you, free of charge. You can also use friction tape, or a piece of heat shrink wrap.

Silicone tape stretches nicely to conform, and does not have any adhesive to leach off and attract dirt.
