Pin Gauge Set Recommendations

The way they split the kits by size in most of the non-firearm related companies is not very shooter friendly, pretty much have to buy 2 kits, then you get into plus/minus sizes, which are both different kits, so that's 4 kits. If you look at the Porter Precision, even with looking at the selection by caliber on the loose pins, you'll get the picture.

If you want 'sets', you will need the 0.060 to 0.250 and the 0.251 to 0.500. Pick either a plus or minus and see if it will do what you want. Get both if needed. They also make them on the half thou plus and minus. Then there are the 10 pc sets in .0001 steps for each thousand. A totally complete library costs many thousands of dollars. MSC sometimes has sets on sale. Buying individual pins is also an option, but can quickly cost more than a single set.

It would be much cheaper and faster to buy a couple of bore micrometers. They cost much less than new on eBay. I have a B&S digital 6-8mm gauge that measures consistently to .0001”. This covers my calibers.

If you have a good micrometer, and everyone should, just buy a new chinese set off eBay. Measure before using. The sizes I use are all within two or three tenths. I don't really have the tools or skill to measure much closer than that. If I were a full time machinist I would buy something better, but I'm not. The Chinese ones work fine for measuring brass and dies.
