Piller and bedding

I have a Boyds stock and will be adding metal pillers and bedding.

After drilling out for the pillers I have a very snug fit with the pillers. I don't think I can really add any epoxy to glue them in place.

I could use CA to glue them in but I am wondering if it is necessary with the tight fit I have right now.

I will be bedding the receiver once I install the barrel.

Any thoughts?

file channels down the hole in the stock
file channels around the pillars
roughen the pillar surface with 80 grit sand paper
load the hole, load the pillars, insert, wipe away excess, let it sit
use the receiver with release compound to set the height of the pillars
jb weld works well for this

Thanks for the advise.

I have used JB weld on another gun that worked great (had my doubts)

The pillers I used were knurled on the outside. They needed to be pressed into the stock, that is why I was wondering about epoxing them in.

I can press them back out and grove down the inside of the hole in the stock.

I drill the holes in the stock oversized so there is room for the epoxy and so the pillars aren't puting a bind on the action.. I also drill the hole in the pillar oversized then put tape around the screws when attaching them to the action so they are centered in the pillar. You do not want the action screws touching the pillars when the bedding job is finished other than the head of the screw.

I turn grooves into the pillars, this causes a mechanical lock. A few small holes drilled at an angle into the stock also works well.

I do not have the pillar holes tight, a clearance for the epoxy is absolutely necessary. A 1/16-1/8 gap is all that's needed.

Cheers.
