Pillar Bedding

I'm in the process of making pillars for my Rem. 700 s a,and was wondering what, other than getting cleaning agents on brass pillars would be the down side of using it. Weight doesn't bother me as I'm doing a heavy stock for local ground hog shoots. I'd make them out of aluminum, but I don't have any on hand but have several brass rods. Would there be any reaction between brass and stainless steel ? Thanks,John

Here is my .02 worth and take it at that. There should be no reaction between the metals but the only problem that i can forsee if i am reading the post right is that brass is very soft in general. As are certain grades of AL. Brass will get, stronger) as it's worked but that can have other affects also. For a pillar job you don't need much metal.. I have purchased enough SS or AL for only a few bucks to do pillars. A brl cut off works great also. Hope this answered your question.

As for pillar materials, I try to use the same material in my epoxy filler as I use for the pillars. So I use Devcon Aluminum with Aluminum Pillars. SS pillars with SS Devcon.

Following this pattern I have materials with similar expansion characteristics.

What degree of hardness is the brass? Nothing wrong with the brass if it is 1/2-3/4 hard material.

You might want to make some small washers for under the screw heads.
