some 1018 rod for the pin slot, some silver solder lipstick, and a few passes on the lipstick-adjuster machine:

there may be hope for this old girl. :)
that tenon ring area took a solid .015 of boring to get new surface metal to completly show around the ID...

well, I just got out of the garage-shop, where I almost made a Recoil lug for it...
typical newbie mistake when about 3/4 of the way done...and oh well... start over.
Also thinking of using one or both those "side slots" in the action face to pin the recoil lug

I have a Shilen barrel for it.

other things to do include
Add a 2nd action screw
convert the trigger to the 540 style and see if I can get it lighter.
I'll try and get it shooting before destroying the trigger.. ;)

I had thought about it, but decided not too. If for no other reason, not 100% sure of the "things" I might overlook/not know enough about to be succesful.
will do a light press fit (hopefully) and loctite.

Recoil Lug made. 1018CRS steel
measures very slight mark-movement over .0001 flatness. not bad for a chinese Mill and a touch of a file.

Is that how all 541s look? I am not really familiar with the action. I am trying to figure out what the cross slot cut in the front of the action face is.

Dont really know would have to look for some pics of others. I got it from the person who got it from CMP. It did have the Repair stamp on the barrel.

I have no idea about the cross-slots, unless they are a carryover from another series.

ah, I think they are an aid, visual or otherwise, in aligning the barell/extractor slots when pressed together.

they are seen in the exploded parts diagram.

timbertoes,
Very nice job my friend, just went through the photo's, very impressive, hope she turns out to be a shooter for you.
Wayne.

thanks kindly.

btw, with the original barrel, the slots in front of the action dont match up with ejection slots in barrel, so still no idea the purpose. maybe factory tooling jig ?

had a not-good situation this afternoon.

I am guessing that the heat applied to get the GM barrel out, and the silver soldering caused the "unsupported" tang to move/warp. Bolt handle area was hanging up on it.
had to re-jig the action and turn the tang area. followed by working it with lots of lapping compound on bolt and tang.
Seems ok now, not tooo tight, but not real easy either. I'd rather see how it wears in.

Also drilled and tapped for a 2nd action screw. Not real big at only 8-32. the limiting factor is the amount of wood available in the stock...between magazine and trigger assy.
better than nothing for sure. ;)

Just bought a 581 to "put lipstick on" and your work is certainly very encouraging... I am waiting for the report on how well the GM barrel shoots. I have had several people tell me that, in their opinion, they are definitely better than the factory barrels on Remington rimfires...

The GM barrel might have shot better, if I was better at the work. Also if you believe in it....turning it all down from 1+ inches to .8+ would have caused the bore to open up.

and it did slug horribly with loose and tight spots. for $85 cant expect a whole lot.

The Shilen barrel is now tenoned, chambered and crowned. waiting on a woodruff key cutter to make the extractor slots.
not going to try it the way I did with the GM barrel... lol. not going there..
