Pierce Actions?

Anyone here use a Pierce Action? what are your opinions on them? I am looking at one for a F/TR build. I would love to run a Barnard S or P but they are quite pricey.

Thanks

I bought one, short action, 308 bolt face, repeater and am very happy with it. I built a 30br and it shoots very well. I don't get flyers anymore. Would reccommend it!!

I have a Pierce now, and have owned/used two Barnards. Good luck finding a Barnard action by itself these days. :o MT Guns has undergone a change in ownership, and inventory is not nearly what it used to be. I think the Pierce action is an outstanding piece of work, and the Pierce men (John and Jim) are great guys to work with.

Im in Canada so i wouldn't be dealing with MT guns on the Barnard. What I am looking at is SA single shot with the coned bolt.

I used a long action version for a .284 build. Outstanding piece of machinery, I also use Barnards, Bordens, etc. ++ to what everyone else said. You won't regret purchasing one. Eric in DL

Actually if you compare the price of the Pierce w/o a trigger and the Barnard that comes with the trigger it does put the prices in a bit better perspective. As was already said it is a bit difficult to find a Barnard right now, not sure what the situation is in Canada.

I'd go with a Barnard: no brainer...even if you have to wait a bit longer. You hardly ever see a Barnard action being re-sold: there's a reason.

If I went with a barnard would I be smarter to go with a P over the S?
Between the single shot models: I would suggest the P. I purchased an S model and did so for the weight advantage and the idea that some Remington components, like stocks and triggers, could be used in the build. As it turned out, you really can't use a Remington stock without serious modification, and you also have to add a traditional recoil lug: none provided. The P model is the one that made Barnard famous and is a complete package: to include awesome trigger, firing spring assembly, integral recoil lug.

Now, Barnard may not be such a great choice if you want a repeater, a light action, Remington parts compatibility. If any of those are important, I'd suggest looking at one of the Stiller, Borden, Defiance, or BAT Remington clones. If you want a top-of-the-line single-shot match action with a stellar winning record and weight is not an issue: the Barnard Model P is hard to beat.

In the end, it's a personal choice like buying a car: hard for someone else to make the right choice for you.

The Pierce definitely belongs in that list. Maybe you haven't used one?

No I have not, and only listed the examples that I have personal experience with or have seen others use successfully. I have used Pierce to build several rifles for me...

More photos of my Pierce. If you have done a little machine work, you will know I had a chore building my front banded sight. I had to scrap the first try.

Butch: What do you think of using the basic SA single shot pierce action in an F/TR build? How do you think they compare to say a Barnard S or P ?

By the way you do nice work :)

Thanks
