pickin your heads on drop chart creation

I've been reading Applied Ballistics and it is stated that when working up a drop chart you should try to have a chronograph for the best results. I do not. I was wondering if you have all the variables but the actual velocity, doing a drop analysis from 100yrds to say 600 could yield decent data for a drop chart out to 1000yrds. I know a slight difference would amount to a larger difference at that distance, but it should get me in a very good ballpark correct?
