Picked up another 17

It had been on gunbroker for several months. I asked and he dropped the minimum, now its mine. Looks like new, not a mark on it, it has been fired, but not much. It is a Cooper 21 in 17 mach IV, with dies and a bunch of components.
It fills a niche between my 17AH and 17-223. Not sure why, but I sure like the 17's.

I've had a Cooper Mach IV for almost 20 years. Great little cartridge! One of my all time favorites. Mine likes 20.1 of H335 and 20gr V Max at 4250. You know the usual caveats on loads.. Great squirrel load, too fast and frangible to be reliable on coyotes. You'll probably find it does everything so well your bigger and smaller 17's won't get as much love.

Your gonna have fun with that...When I had a 17 rem. it was a lazer at well over 4000fps. It's now a 20 practical
but I have been thinking about getting another 17 and the Mach IV would be ideal. Sounds like you will have a shooter
for sure being a cooper.

I’m sure you will love it.I have a few Coopers too,wound up with a 17HeBee VE which is pretty close to the 17Mach 1V which I also have in a 700/40-X stock and an XP-100 all shoot very well.Living in the high country I hope you try out that Mach1V on a few rock chucks,keep us posted.

Mostly ground squirrels around here, I killed 886 of them one year, on one property! But I do get into prairie dogs when I go into Utah or Wyoming.
Marmots have a season in colorado! In august when I am busy with other stuff. My 17 hornet is absolutely perfect for the little ground squirrels, but the mach IV will see use on them as well.
Not sure what twist it is, but will likely run 25's it if will stabilize them.

I assume the Cooper is a 10 twist,a 9 can be had for quite an upcharge though.My 17Mach1V has a Shilen 10 twist and it has done well will most normal 25’s the 25 V-Max however is too long for it,definitely need a 9 for that bullet.Luckily my XP has a 9 and let me tell you those 25 grain V-Max’s bring the 17Mach1V into a whole other realm.The little bit of extra wght and better b.c. really help whacking the distant pd’s

Got the dies, brass, and bullets that came with the gun today. A small amount of brass that looks usable, several hundred bullets of different flavors, and dies. Form dies, and a FL sizer, but no seating die.
I would suppose that I could use a 17 fireball seater? But, I don't have one of those either. Yet.

The 17Mach1V is the cartridge that got me started with arbor dies.Wilson makes very nice dies that produce very accurate reloads.If you are not too deep into this project money wise it might be a great time to get an arbor press and at least a seater to get started.

My 17 Rem Cooper VE with a 10 twist Shilen shoots 25 gr. V-MAX into about a modified pattern. Switching to 20 gr. V-MAX makes all the difference in the world.
