Phone calls at 4 am ?

RANT W are the phone calls in the middle of the night all about?
3 the other night 2am, 3am and 4am. I called id em them then called the numbers, none were any good. I have dialed *77 and activated the block unknown caller, I hope this will help. I wonder if it is a secret government survey or something? Will I have to wear my tinfoil beanie to bed too? Anyone else have this?

my beeper went off at 2 AM once and the screen was filled with numbers. they made no sense so i ignored them. once awake, i looked at the numbers and they were an area code in oklahoma...i live in tenn! i just had to call it suspecting some sort of drug dealer or worse. granny somebody answered and i said "sorry, wrong number".

Never ceases to amaze me just how much friggin idle blabbing people do on their phones ALL the time. I head for Church on Sunday for 1.5 hours and my phone stays HOME !!! I hear the cell phones ring all the time in Church and have yet to overhear a life-or-death emergency. Instead you can overhear the conversation "Soccer practice at 11:15AM, blah, blah, blah...... "Do you want eggs with pancakes when you get home, because we are out of milk. blah blah, blah.

There is a device available that you can install on your home phone. It requires the caller to enter a password or your phone doesn't even ring! If my wife wasn't set against it, I'd do that!

How many of those calls do you get between 2 and 6PM where there is nobody there. I don't know if it is the truth, but I was told they are the robocall people finding out when you are home. They then can sell that info to a company that will then try and sell you something.

Sorry.....I couldn't resist that!!! ;D Your turn. But don't punch me too hard, I bruise easy. :-* . This is very common today amongst my own family and friends and I'm still trying to get use to the static and diconnects associated with cell phone only use. But, nothing stays the same. And a lot of us do what we have to do to make our dollar stretch further. Getting rid of the home phone has become one of those things.

Check with your phone provider and make sure your not be billed for long dist. calls that somelce made, and that's not someone in your house. Like from the county jail etc.

Yes I think I have the solution. I picked up a timer that I will set to turn off my phones, I will set them to go off at 11pm and come on at 7am. If someone dies please don't call during those hours. Yup I'm on the NY do not call list also.

You all probably got that phone call Hillary was talking about. You know the one right? Oh, and do not call list are simply confirmation that your phone number really exists.

I guess that as a utility lineman, I'm used to late night/early morning calls. I still have had a few weird calls.I once got a call at 2:00 am and the caller identified their self to be a deputy from a nearby county. He informed me that my son was in jail. I ask if he was ok, then what he was in jail for. The caller stated "drugs". I got up, looked in his bedroom, and found him fast asleep. A couple of days later, we heard that a friend had the same call. They left home, headed for the sheriff's office, and were robbed while they were away from home.

Another time, I had a late night call asking for someone that I did not know. I informed them that they had a wrong number and they slammed the phone down. Ok, two can play that game. When the alarm went off at 0515, I got up and looked at caller ID. I called that number and when the guy answered, I said " wake up sleepyhead". He mumbled "who is this" and I said " this is the guy that you woke up at 2am, and the rest of the world is going to work and its time for you to get up".

I guess that its a good thing, that as a utility lineman, that I am use to being woke up during the night. Not everyone has their wits at that time of night. Lightman

I have my phone set to ignore and repel unknown callers after 6 PM and before 7 AM. Besides I cannot hear the phone ring any longer when I am sleeping..

jonbearman: I got onto the Pennsylvania (and federal) do-not-call list when they first became available.

In the beginning it worked very well, and the few calls I did receive, I got all the calling companies info, thanked the caller & reported them to the Pa. State Attorney Generals office. A few resulted in prosecution, fines being payed and checks in the $27 to $35 dollar range received by me.

Then, about 2 years ago that all changed, as I continued to report those who continued to violate the do-not-call listings. Received a letter from the A.G. office apoligizing and saying there is now little or nothing they can do to stop the calls, since they are being routed thru overseas bases and numbers, multiple times, and they are impossible to trace.

We now screen all calls, and do not answer to any number and/or caller I.D. that we do not recognize.

Opting out to robo calls does not work either, I'm told, since doing so only verifies that your number is an active phone line, as proven to me, (but only twice, until I caught on), and the number of calls actually increased. Certain organizations (the AARP is notorous for this) sell their membership I.D.'s to third parties, so there is another source. No, I don't belong to the AARP, but another family member does.

Blocking the calls, I've now been told, does not always work either, since the caller is routed to a different calling source number on a numerical list.

My phone rang twice last night and the number shows 1 330 281 4543 when I redial that number it tells me can't be completed as dialed. The second is a magic jack number. I hate to put a timer on my phone but this sucks.

Another thing to be mindful of is, bad guys casing your home out. Could be something there they might want and maybe you have something ready that they may not want.
