Phoenix from Cooper Firearms

I need some help from any Cooper owners out there, specifically their varmint rifles. I am wanting to buy one of the Phoenix single shot in 22-250. Do these guns shoot as good as advertised? I've seen some test targets that are one hole groups, is this common? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the Phoenix in 6.5-284 and it shoots! Several spring bears are now rugs because of the accuracy of the rifle.

I've got a Phoenix in 20VT it shoots lights out. 1/2" groups are not uncommon. I dont shoot much paper mostly GS's, it's a head popping red mist machine.

I think the stock is a bit dainty but it works.

I own a Model 22 Classic in 6.5x55. Still working up loads, but when I do my part 1/2" groups at 100 yards are routine and I can often do a fair bit better than that. I'm very pleased with the rifle.

I only claim to own three Coopers, a 20VT, 204 Ruger, and a 223 Rem. The target below was shot with my Cooper 223 M21 VR and is about typical of what all of them will do with handloads (H335 and a Nosler 40gr BT in this case). The only difference is that all mine wear walnut.

Moral: Cooper rifles DO shoot.

Dave T,

Listen very Close.
Don't buy that Cooper!. STAY AWAY!
You Buy it, and you'll be "ADDICTED FOREVER!"
My Addiction started about 15yrs ago and it hasn't STOPPED yet!

BTW,
there are two good buys on GunBroker now,
one is for $800 (6x45) and another for $1000 (a 22/250),
both have the wood stock though.
I really like my Coopers with the Phoenix Stocks.
Good Luck and go for it, Dave.

Have a model 21 in 19-223, this gun shoots very well. Shooting half inch and under groups is not hard if you do you part. These rifles are so pretty with the wood stocks you hate to take them hunting.

I am glad you guys have better luck with your rifles than I did with the one I had. it was a 22-250, had a nice piece of walnut, etc. the test target was one of those little one hole jobs. I could never get it to do better than 3/4" groups. with the very, very rare occasional 1/2" group. most of the time the groups were up around an inch (3 shot groups). I have to say that was only one gun experience of my own. The rifling looked good, but I also was the second owner. The original owner said they had less than a couple hundred rounds thru it. They look great thou. I am always tempted when I see one to try again. I just like the nice wood. A pretty stock has cost me more than once...

My friend has 2 and in .223 and .221 fireball. The fireball shoots tiny little holes at 100 yds. And I mean a hole.

I am also in the market to order a Phoenix in 22-250. However I want a left hand model and I want a repeater. Just bought my first Cooper a few months back. A 57M in 22LR. And it will shoot.

Hopefuly I will like the Phoenix stock. I know I like the HS stock(without the palm swell) that HS makes for Remington. And the Phoenix is suppose to be very similar?? Tom.

They are that good my 223 AI shoot it's fireforminf loads in the .3 s my 223 shoots factory loads the cheap stuff I bought when running short of brass better than half min just started to work on my hornet will let u know

Dave T,

I just rec'd my Phoenix 6BR 1:10 twist and it is terrific. Best 300 yard 5 shot group is .668" with 100 yard groups in the low 1's. I will diffinently get another.

Question > how are the triggers ?
Does COOPER use the same trigger on all their rifles and are they externally adjustable ?
thanks

cd

I requested mine to be set at 2 lbs. Since I don't have a trigger gauge I can't say for sure that's where it's set but it is real nice, no creep and seems to break at the same spot every time. For now, I don't see any reason to mess with the external adjustment.

I don't know if all their rifles have the same trigger but I'd bet they do.

So did you have the dealer that ordered the rifle request a 2 pound trigger pull, this is very important to me and I'm glad you all brought this up, I never though about the trigger, thanks all....

There is a 5/2/11 posting on saubier.com stating that Cooper will introduce a competition trigger near the end of this year. Reportedly adjustable to 6 oz. and priced at about $125. Posting is by xring. Search on "good news on Cooper triggers".
