Peterson .300 win mag -long brass?

muleman69

USMC -1st marine Div. RVN
Has anyone tried the new 300 win mag long Brass from Peterson? An can anyone tell me what the long means?

Can't believe there is more demand for this than the 300WSM...
I would really, really, really like to see Peterson make a WSM case, but a trip to any local gun shop should disabuse one of the notion that there is more demand for WSM reloading supplies than .300Win Mag stuff.

Also, now that Peterson has gotten into the loaded ammo game that may start (or has all ready started) driving decisions as well.

If someone wants a job over there they should apply. Just be happy what they make is good brass. They have already showed they have their own idea's on what brass to make. Doesn't have to make sense to anyone but themselves. God Bless America.

Since belted magnums are designed to headspace off the belt, most factory brass comes with the shoulder a bit short. The ones I've measured are usually in the .010" to .015" range. After the first firing you're going to have "long" brass anyway because the shoulder will be blown forward to match your chamber dimensions. I suppose the benefit to buying the long brass would be to make your first firing more consistent with subsequent firings, since that fireforming process consumes energy and velocity is reduced. I haven't noticed much of a change with the Norma brass I use. Keep in mind that .015" is about the thickness of a business card, so there is not a huge difference between the regular and long versions.

I have boxes of both. The long is +0.010" at the shoulder.

With the reamer I'm using, the shoulder usually rolls forward 0.017" on firing. Factory chambers might go a little more. The whole case doesn't stretch that far, the shoulder just fire forms.

With neck turned brass, I don't see any velocity difference between new and once fired.

Good info ,thanks

I'm biased towards Peterson since they are a local company to me and I've gotten to know several employees.

I've heard from folks at my range say that @Peterson Cartridge Company provides cartridge cases to more than just American sportsmen and women. They also get big (really big) orders from the customers like the US Armed Forces and other allied nations. I think that it was more than just elk hunters driving the .300 Win Mag decision.

They're trying to add a third production line (if they haven't already). They are basically running at full capacity with the tools they currently have. Realize that if they could flip a switch today and have 300 WSM dropping out the back of the machine they probably would.

They've got to fill the orders they have in front of them, so they have capital to buy the tooling to grow. This is a small company and a small dedicated staff. They're not ignoring your requests for WSM/PRC brass....they just haven't had time.

Don't give up though....let them know what you want next.
Regards,
Ross
