pd shooters, what do you zero at

now this is an open question, pd shooters, say using a 223 or 22-250 (or something like that) what distance do you zero your rifle in at -- thus adjusting your hold when in the dog town?

or do you use a 100 zero and a chart to change the moa per shot?

Bob

I used .223's in my PD hunting days with 40 grain pills. I always sighted in 1.5 inches high at 100 and that would keep me on them out to 325-350 aiming dead on. If I was shooting further than say 400 yards i would pull something else out of the gun case.

I should add that I fired the rifles to sight in at home before the trip and then would recheck my 1.5 inch high zero when we got to our hunting spots. The rifle's usually required a few clicks here and there due to elevation and humidity differences.

I had a .223 shooting 50 gr B-Tips, a .220 Swift shooting 52gr A-Maxs, a 22-250 shooting 55gr BlitzKings and a .257A.I. shooting 85gr B-Tips. The .223 I shot 1" high at 200 yrds, the Swift and '250 I sighted at 300 yards and the .257A.I. I put 2" high at 300 yards. The wind up in Dalhardt, Texas and the unknown distances made "shoot and hope to see" a part of the shooting event. With a "spotter" hits on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th shots had a considerably higher "hit" percentage than if you could not see the bullet strike the ground. But since the P'Dogs were shot at unknown distances, you kind of had to "get used" to about how far over and to one side to hold. The FLATTER shooting the better! The '250 and the Swift were excellent on them past 300+ yards and took a lot of the "guess" out of holding!

Shootdots,

my one trip for Ga. to Dalhart was in August as an older friends driver and buddy, all I can say is the wind, heat (dogs went down about 7:30-8:00am ) and did not come up till half hour befor dark,
uggggly.

They went down early>>>BUT the ones out past 300-350 were still up! But hits out that far in the wind took 2 or more shots with a spotter.. But they were there..

22-250 AI 4000fps, zeroed at 200yds. With the speed of my load I can hold on a p-dog out to 300yds. The varmint hunter retical in my Leupold is good out 600. You just have to know the distance.

200 yd. zero on shorter range cartridges (based on .222/223) and 300 on longer range cal., such as .22-250, .220 Swift and the 6mm's.

100 yards on everything and use drop charts and PDA to adjust. I find it easier if I have them all the same as to avoid confusion when the shooting gets going. Also helps if you need to check zero for some reason.

All my uppers get 250 to 350 and I use the reticle to hold off.
All my bolt rifles are 100 and I dial in most shots.

100 Yards and use Reticles with 1MOA Markings to adjust for hold over and wind.

I find that 80 % of my pdogs are from 75 to 300 yards, Using .222 and .223 I zero at 250. That puts me at 300 point blank for 80% of my shots. I am 1 1/2 inches high or so depending on caliber at 100. Aim at the part of em that intersects the ground for shorter ranges, out to 300 hold dead on their noggin. Over 300, look at your drops noted on the rifle. (or pistol, Contender) It's always windy, so if you log windage on your drop sheet, you will be right there. I use a wind meter and try to keep track. I learned a great trick from another member that I met on here. ( thanks, Robert) Put your empties back in the box upside down when you miss. That way you can figure your hit percentage. It will also make you focus a little more the second time you keep track!

Almost all my guns are 100 yard zero and dial.
I do have one 264win mag that I have zero'd at 250 it's my fast light kill anything that moves @ 500 yards and under.
