Panda recoil lug

The Kelbly Pandas I have all have a built in recoil lug on the front bottom of the flat portion of the action.

Thats what I thought but not what they said at Bruno's

Without a recoil lug and only using the rear tang, I'm thinking that the build would be limited to a 6BR or PPC. That being said I'd like to keep the options open for the build and put a recoil lug on it. Anyone know if a standard Holland or like would fit a Panda?

If i was going to build anything 243 and smaller i would not think twice about not using a recoil lug. With the large flat bottom and big back tang and bedded properly you will have no problems. This is my opinion and i have built several rifles off Jims actions like this with no problems.

If you are really worried about recoil, mill a lug in the bottom flat like a Bat Then you will have two......jim

What do you consider a 'big' cartridge? up to a .308 win?
Several people claim to have had good luck with plain glue ins shooting WSM's and the like. I tend to over build, so add screws to a good glue in and it should be ok for at least that range of cartridge. The stock design and fill could well be the limiting factor, particularly at the tang area, and that can be substantially reinforced prior to glueing it all up. If you think about it, the screws will help maintain a good bond for the glue by preventing it from loosening in the bedding, and as long as the glue is bonded, the load is spread out over the entire action area.

After you get done reading all these opinions i would suggest you call Jim Kelbly and talk with him about your question. He will steer you in the direction you want to go and give you the info you need to do what ever it is you are wanting to do or build. His advice is golden.

I can't believe how stupid Bat is for having put two recoil lugs on the actions, and they shoot very well that way......jim

My first 1K gun was built on a Panda in 6.5-284.

Tom Meridith just milled a slot in the bottom of the action for a "reverse" recoil lug......

I have used/shot Panda actions for 30 yrs.....lots of use of bigger than BR ctgs.....260/.280 AI/30-06 etc....with the action bedded (not glued in)....and no recoil lug....OBTW...if you hold a recoil lug up to the front of a Panda action you will see it doesnt hang very far below the bottom of the action!!!so it would be no help....that is why the rear of the Pandas are made the way they are.....if you want a Panda with a lug Kelblys makes an F-class with a lug or the Kodiak with a lug....I have used them also with no problems....they are the best out there IMHO...Roger
