panda bedding question

I have a panda with no recoil lug on it. i want to build a 6 dasher. Is it OK to just bed this action without a recoil lug or do I need to add a lug,if thats possible) to insure it doesnt move during recoil or any other ideas . I have a kelby 1k stock with the panda foot print molded in also. thanks

The square rear end of the Panda action acts as a recoil lug. No need to add a regular one up front. I have used a Panda for cartridges as big as a 280 Ackley, with 180 gr bullets) and never had a problem. You just need to make sure that you bed the rear of the action on a good foundation of epoxy, just like you would a standard lug. For a pipsqueek cartridge like a dasher, you don't even need to do that. ;)

Two other options if you'd feel better.

Mill a slot, reverse lug) in the bottom of the action, or do like Bat does, and add a lug to the bottom of the action in a slot that's drilled and tapped.

I've got a Panda that Stan Ware @ SGR fitted with a recoil lug. Stan milled a .250 wide slot across the bottom of the action just behind the face of the reciever, fit a piece of .250 alum. into this cut, drilled and tapped the reciever body for two 8-32 Allen headed bolts countersunk into the lug. The bottom of the lug extends .375 below the bottom of the action. It's worked fine for 5 seasons of hard BR use.

I've seen lots of rigs with the rear tang as the recoil lug that have worked w/o any issues. I've also seen a couple of stocks that have been damaged behind the tang from this. One very popular stock mfg. told me they don't recommend this for their stocks as that part of the stock simply wasn't designed to take that type of repetitive load.

A pal of mine recently did this same type of setup for one of his customers, but with a twist. He inletted a .500 dia. alum. rod at an angle through the pistol grip area, epoxied it in place leaving a good portion of it extending into the inletted part of the stock for the tang and then milled the rod to match the inlet. What he ended up with was a reinforced rear tang area that will handle the recoil load and distribute that load through the grip area. Should work great.

You can also simply use a Rem. style recoil lug at the front and pin it to the front face of the reciever if you don't wish to alter the reciever by cutting a slot in it, etc. Barrels are a bit more of a hassle with this setup as you need to cut a relief on each new barrel for the lug but that's really not a big deal....no more than on a Remington 700...plus with a pinned lug the barrel changes are easy because the lug stays in position. And with a Panda, there's ample room for decent diameter pins versus a smaller round action. I've seen one Panda done this way where the alum. lug was cut to match the Panda body dimensions and fit like a glove.

For what it's worth.

Another option is the next time ya buy a Kelbly action is to get the Cub,,which is the same as the Panda and it has a build in lug..Its a pistol action but can be made into a rifle....Just my .002...

The Panda was designed with no recoil lug. The recoil is taken on this action the most logical way. Why then the need to add a uuseless, for this action) appendix?

As far as I understand, Jasper is not intending to launch grenades with his action?
