PALO ALTO MID-RANGE F-CLASS PRONE AUGUST MATCH
AUGUST 2, 2014

30 shooters took a chance on the rain and came out. It rained a bit during the sign in period and we actually had a one hour rain delay after the first string, but no one expected the nice temperatures we had all match. Starting in the 70’s and only being up to around 85 by the end of the day was quite nice for August.

There were 15 200’s shot today and a new range record set in F-Open.

In Open we had 12 shooters. David Decereaux made his first match after winning the F-Open National at Camp Perry. David set off on his first string with a range record 200-19X. This also ties the National record, but because this is an Approved match and not a Tournament, he only gets bragging rights. But, Jim Suber, Jerry Boudreaux and Marc Olivier also shot 200’s on their first string, so David knew he would probably have his hands full for the day if he was going to get his first win at Palo this year. And he did. When all the shooting was done, 11- 200’s had been shot for the day and it went to a tiebreaker to determine the winner. Both David and Jerry Boudreaux shot 599’s for the match, but David edged Jerry out on X-count posting 44 to Jerry’s 36 to take the win with Jerry taking 1st High Master. There was only 1 point difference between the top 3 shooters.
David shot 2-200’s, Jerry shot 2-200’s, Jim Suber shot 2-200’s, Marc Olivier shot 2-200’s, Taylor Boudreaux shot 2-200’s. Rick Smith shot the other 200. And although the first group that shot today had calm wind conditions, the Palo winds started in on the second group and never let up. That was some fantastic shooting by this group today!
Rick Smith again took the Master/Master Unclassified/Expert 1st place with a 595-23X. I think Rick’s first card from the NRA will be a High Master one.

In FTR there were 10 shooters. Jade Delcambre posted a commanding 598-31X to win overall and also shot one of the 200’s for the day. This is his 2nd win in a row. Great job, Jade! Craig Martin took 1st High Master with a 593-27X.
In the combined Master/Expert class, Brad Mitchell took 1st with a 583-14X.

The prone group saw 9 shooters. Warren Freeman bested Gary Henry by 1 point to take the overall win with a 597-34X. Gary was 1st High Master with a 596-28X. In the Master/Master Unclassified/Marksman group Harold Sightler took 1st with a 582-23X. Warren, Gary and Rob Westfall each shot a 200.

Man. You guys are putting it on it down there. Great shooting. I say congrats are in order to all those scores and especially the guys winning.

Look what Jade did in F-T/R! That is some phenomenal shooting not only for F-T/R but for ANY discipline! Great shooting Jade!! And of course, David Decereaux is STILL at the top of the game! Great shooting Dave! And lets face it, the rest of the guys shot scores that are nothing to sneeze at either!! What a match!!

Great job Rick, I know you put a lot of time in to make sure the Palo Alto matches are very smooth. Looking forward to the next one.

About PA
One of the reasons for those scores is directly attributable to the Palo Alto match staff.
1. They absolutely insist on safety.
2. They absolutely insist on following the rules.
3. They fulfill these two criteria admirably, but in such a way that allows the shooter to do what the shooter came to do - focus on shooting.
Shooting at Palo Alto is not a trip back in time to boot camp. It's not an opportunity for frustrated old men to live out their dreams of military stoicism between honey-dos. It's not an opportunity for the match director or line safety officers or pit bosses to do their George Patton impressions.
It is a place where good shooters come to prove that they are good shooters - and they do because they are allowed to.

I live in central Mississippi. Palo Alto Rifle and Pistol Club is in South Louisiana. (3.5 hours away) If they opened a 1000 yard range in my backyard tomorrow, I would still be at PA once a month, as regular as clockworks.

Thanks PA

It was a great well run match as usual, big thanks to the PA crew for the job they do to make it happen. Glad we were able to dodge the rain and get it done.

Dean, i agree, its tough nowdays to win no matter where you shoot. I looked back at the winning scores from Palo Alto from just a couple years ago and its amazing how much higher they are on average now than they were then.

Ben, thanks, it was a new load i was testing for 1000 yard matches even though it was a 600 yard match yesterday and it shot much better than i was expecting it to. Needless to say, im happy with it. See you in October at the LA state match, we'll have a good time.

Congrats to all for some fine shooting! A special congratulation to Jade Delcambre for his outstanding F-TR score, only one point off the winning F-Open score! Jade is on a steady climb to the top of the heap, doing an outstanding job with the Flex-Pod. Overall a pretty outstanding week for Flex-Pod shooters, 5th place in the Mid-Range Nationals and 3 shoot-off wins over the Jim Murphy's Joy-Pod at Camp Perry.
