painting a stock

I been spray can painting stocks. It is not really working out. The paint job is good but the stock gets banged, abuse with oil, cleaning solvent, etc... What to do? I do not want to buy a compressor, sprayer, nor pay someone. Car shop wanted $100 per stock. I have a friend epoxy prime them. He can paint them but has only white, because he does boat bottoms,(sail boats). Is there a good spray can paint or can I brush it on. Thanks, nilebartram

Go by a sherwin williams and see if you can get something comparable to polane in a spray can or roll on some bedliner material from auto zone

You want a top notch job you can do yourself contact costal airbrush 714-635-5557, they sell house of color paint, base coat clear coat automotive grade paint. i used the spray max 2 part urethane aerosol the activator built in the can to activate. They will get you fixed up with correct primer and clear coat for the temp your at. I was very pleased how mine turned out, all in the prep work. Bill

Your problem is that you are not allowing the paint enough time to cure/harden, even two part paints with an epoxy hardener require 30 days cure time.

Just wanted to let people know, thanks for the replies. Also, I tried the Rust-o-leum tan truck bed coating. Works OK! It is a little rough, but not bad. Could be good for hunting, wet environment. Maybe some sanding, 600wt or a clear coat, or both. Gonna try the black next. Will keep in touch and let you guys know how it goes. nilebartram

Did you shoot a clear over your rattle can paint job? I rattle canned mine about 5 years ago and shot a matte clear over it and let it sit for about a week prior to re assembly and so far it's held up well, couple spots on the barrel where I hit stuff while field shooting but the stock has held up rather well. Later,

I've seen that flek paint that is spray cans Some years ago quite a few were useing them,
you could then give it several coats of clear enamel from spray cans
Preval,s work ok you could also go to a auto body paint supply and have them make up some custom spray enamel.
single stage paints are pretty tough just take it easy and give it some time between coats.
There,s whole set of instruction's in the archiveson stock painting, It;s a good read
