Ive just bought a stainless steel savage target action and am waiting on a stainless barrel to go with it. Im not much into shiney stainless steel, and even though i will be using this mostly on the bench i would like to get a nice durrable flat black coating on these pieces.

I plan on giving the stock a camo job of my own but im not sure if i want to try that on these parts. I have been looking at boron nitride coating, and one company even sells the stuff in spray cans but i would like this layer as thin as possible and something that isnt going to chip off.

I was just trying to find what was out there. Oh and cost, im going to be spending most of what i got for the gun and scope and i hope this step isnt too spendy. Thanks for any help

Cool, that stuff sounds really good, and it seems i would have no problem doing it myself.

I will ask more about this duracoat, but i think in a different section... it seems a little slow here. lol

Also look into Cerakote. Supposedly tougher than Duracote. Have a gun almost to be sent to Ross Precision Gunworks to be Cerakoted. They seem to have a good reputation on Sniper's Hide.

Yeah i just found that and Gun Kote, they both seem very impressive. Gun Kote sounds great just because it comes in a spray can and it is just a very thin layer, i would have no problem doing that myself. Cerakote I would need an airbrush(which i have but its a crappy one and i have no propelent for it) Brownells is sold out of Matte Black gun kote so i will look around for a local guy that offers Cerakote. Ether i will order brownells Gun Kote or find a local guy that offers Cerakote, whatever happens first. Im just not to wild about shipping the barrel all over and having to wait a month or so for something that is pretty quick and simple. Thanks guys.

Dura coat is a good product & realitively easy to use. My suggestion is to order a kit directly from Dura Coat that includes an instructional DVD. You can get good results easily. I personally would stay away from a spray can although they look like an easier proposition, they usually don't give the results that you'll get from an airbrush attached to a compressor. If you don't have a compressor, maybe a friend has a small one that you could borrow. I use a pancake instead of the big compressor because I know that there isn't any water in it. P.S. Canned air doesn't cut it usually.

My airbrush is more of a toy than a tool. It is a Testors airbrush i used for models as a kid, it has a rubber hose made only to connect to "air" cans. It works reasonably well, i dont know what sort of psi it is made to handle but i could fashon a quick connect into the rubber hose(if i can find a small enough insert to get into the hose) and use my neighbors compressor.

But if i go with the airbrush rout i will just buy some cerakote and bake it on.

You can pick up a realitively cheap airbrush that will have an attachment so it can be used with a standard compressor. I BELIEVE that ceracote has a non-baking formula as well.

Gun kote I believe is a bake on as well I've heard good things about it. I used brownells aluma-hyde on my last varmint rig and it's holding up well considering the crap I put it through. My advice if you go with Alumahyde is to spray two coats with the second being applied from a couple feet away to make it a truly matte finish. I believe they also have a parkerizing spray that might be worth looking into. Go to their site and you can look through their selection, search by ratings and read the reviews. They usually even have videos to show you how to do it.

Thanks for the help. I think im going with cerakote, as long as the 30" barrel fits in my oven. I plan on camoing my stock also but that stuff is not cheap so going from a solid coror barrel to a multi color stock gets spendy fast.

You can probably send out your barreled action or whatever and have it back Cerakoted faster and cheaper than if you ordered the stuff from Brownells, waited for delivery, and did it yourself, unless you're planning to Cerakote a lot of guns. The vendor I cited above seems to have very short turnaround, less than a week.

I thought about sending it out but i can do my barrel and action for cheaper. I just need to get those two taken care of then i can mount my scope and shoot. I plan on buying several different colors of the cerakote refill kits and finishing up the stock whenever i can buy the paint.

But as long as i get the barrel and action done i can mount the scope. so thats priority #1, i can take the action off and paint the stock whenever, no problem.
