Pacific Tool and Gauge Charges $15.70 to ship a 20c screw

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
Looking to restock on side bolt stops. Thought their shipping was high. So I put a single 20c reamer bushing retaining screw in the shopping cart. Still $15.70 shipping.

Even worse, the stainless is in stock, blued steel is not. So I think they will insist on shipping them separately for $17+ each.

Every time I buy from them I am thankful I can find other vendors for most of my stuff.

Shipping seems to be the biggest problem with buying online. Just recently I wanted to purchase a $5.00 item for my wife, but cancelled the order after seeing the shipping was $10.95. Can't see how they can justify it...

It's not just the shipping cost you are paying for, it's the package and the "handling" charge to get someone to prepare the order, physically getting the item, putting in the package, invoicing or packing slip, sealing, labeling and taking to shipping. Buy yourself a nice screw assortment, at .20 it's not that much, and hand them out to you friends for Christmas. Remember, it's like a 15.96 gift.:rolleyes:o_O

PS I don't need the screw. I need the reamer stops which are just slightly larger. I chose the screw to illustrate the ridiculous charges. I had a coin business for years and spent hours every night after I got the kids to bed shipping coins to coin collectors. Clearly I didn't charge enough for shipping. But here is a free tip for shippers, by far the cheapest way to ship 13 oz or less is USPS first class in a padded envelope or small box. About $2.

Someone should also tell boltfluter (paul). He isn't charging $13/package for material and labor.

Brownells edge works great for small items like this if you are a frequent consumer. Hopefully your wife likes gifts from Brownells. --Jerry

Ya that's BS. Just make the price what you REALLY want for it and make shipping the actual pennies it cost to ship the damn thing. Really... For a screw. Who's really getting the screw ???

All of the above is accurate. What's missing is the supplier has to order, receive and inventory the part also. Then the time period between the inventory and the actual sale. Lots of things happen in that time frame.
I'm not justifying anyone's charges, but there is more to it than first appears.

Defending this as a cost of doing business doesn't make sense to me. Inflating shipping costs instead of raising prices just upsets customers. Now PTG prices aren't really discount...I wonder how well they run the business. --Jerry

Or, if you don't like the cost of shipping, you can always jump in the car/truck and go pick it up at the will call counter.;)
That should save you a BUNCH of money.

Like me, probably a UPS shipper. $10.95 is about a minimum charge these days. The folks that complain about shipping cost should go to UPS & FedEx and complain, that is if you can find anyone who cares to talk to.

Seems to me nobody's opinion is gonna change regardless of what anyone offers as justification for what some believe is nothing but price GOUGING. But the solution is simply obvious for those who object to ridiculous pricing.....DON'T BUY FROM THEM! They aren't the only business available that can supply you with what you seek. I've heard the same complaints for years about other suppliers and they are still in business doing quite well.

Well a padded envelope is about $1.50+ first class shipping is $2.70. I imagine a robot doesn't pull the order and the person that does it works for wages. Probably a little in benefits?
Oh, I charge $5. for the shipping on a padded envelope with merchandise.
I always try to order a few items so the shipping doesn't hurt as bad.

Yeah you gotta watch the shipping every order cause they are always trying to gouge you. I notice lately Amazon will tell you free shipping but then you get to the end of the order and they have charged shipping. They make it hard to figure out how to get the free shipping So I imagine many people give up and just pay it. I have canceled quite a few good sized orders because of shipping. I do like the Brownells edge--they get more business from me and I can order any little thing anytime I want instead of saving up to order because of shipping.

If you have Amazon Prime you're shipping is free. I've never seen any free shipping that wasn't free. Everything that I purchased stated the shipping. Never had a problem.

I went to the site and was able to get shipping of that screw down to under $10 USPS First Class. You have to choose when the shipping option page comes up. Seems a little pricey, but like others have said, they are not a one man operation and it takes time and resources to get it to you. $2.50 for the post office and the rest for the manpower and materials to get it in the mail to you.
