Pac Nor Barrels

I've never seen any mention of Pac Nor barrels being used in the various BR competitions. Any particular reason for this?
I have a very nice Pac Nor Super Match on my 6mm/284, and its the most accurate gun I've owned. My initial groups were hovering around the 1/4 to 1/2 MOA at 125 yards.

Michael.

Michael, we currently have a 6mmBr.com project gun in progress with PacNor. It will be a Savage 10FP rebarrelled to 6mm BR. The barrel is a custom contour 27" and about .920" at the muzzle. Dave Kiff is working on a reamer optimized to shoot factory Lapua Ammo. We hoped to have it ready by the end of the year, but Lapua 105s have been back-ordered for a long time. Pac-Nor did a great job working out a special contour that retains the Savage barrel nut but uses a larger diameter than the conventional Savage Profile. So far, our experience with Pac-Nor is that they are very responsive to customer requests and they work fast.

I have a Pac Nor in 8 twist that they did a prechamber and thread on for my Savage. I sinstalled it myself and the barrel is heavy. I will have to get it out of the safe and measure the muzzle and take a pic. It shoots great and is on a single shot action. Pac Nor does great work and the throat and chamber are just as I asked for.

Here is one of my Pac Nors....260 AI....1x8 twist...also have 6BR...223 AI....with 6XC 1x8 on order, will have in January......I would reccomend these guys, even after their recent price hike....a SS Super match, unfluted Savage prefit will set you back $340....add about $100 if they set it up on your action. Great accurate barrels!! This 260 AI is 'no nut' Savage....but really rocks!!

Dogbuster,

Thats a seriously wicked piece of rifle you have there! Bet it shoots like a demon as well.

Am I presuming that the stock is a Choate Ultimate Varmint? I have just brought one off a guy in Arkansas, Penny at Pac Nor is shipping the stock to me down here in New Zealand. Pac Nor are truely a neat bunch of people who will really go out of their way to help you.

My Rifle Basix trigger arrived today for my remy 700. Couple that with the stock and she's gonna look mighty impressive. Not many shooters here in NZ would even begin to spend the amount I have on my 6mm/284 - most kiwi shooters would say WFT is that?

Though I don't yet have a PacNor bbl. on a bolt rifle, I believe that's the brand I'll go with on the next project I do. I've got three of their 3-groove 6.5 twist bbls. on ARs - two 20" service rifle uppers, and a 28" match rifle upper. The first of the two SR uppers has won our state SR championship match two years running for me - it's an absolute hammer with JLK 90s at 500/600yds. They clean up fast & easy and shoot good - what more could you ask for?

Have to also comment on ease of cleaning the Pac Nors...they do clean up nicely....I break in with 50 rds 'bare' bullets, then switch to moly. Using Kroil & Butch's bore cleaner, cleaning is a breeze. Even with the 260 AI, burning 42.5 & 46.5 grs of powder in my favorite loads, it takes only a few patches, even after 50 rds. All my Pacs are 3 groove....SS SM barrels. This p/dog my longest ever @ 1418 yds using 107 SMKs, in Oct '04. This rifle killed 12 p/dogs in excess of 1000 yds this past summer, this pic being the longest & last dog of summer. Scope is Leupold 6-18 Target. Optional Burris Signature ring inserts used...rifle prints +12" high @ 100 with scope on -0- elevation....takes 108 clicks up to go to 1400 yds.

I have also discovered my Pac Nor is a breeze to clean as well. Its taking me about 4 patches to clean the bore completely. My Pac Nor is also a stainless super match 3 groove.

What paint did you find the best for applying onto your Choate Ultimate Varmint?

Michael

Camo paint.....have used HS Camo mostly......but also have used Krylon flat camo...as shown on this 6BR.....pine branches or sage brush are my usual overlay. Simple stock prep....wipe down with thinner...let dry....apply base coat....let dry....do overlay of your choice..let dry completely before touch.

Here's a pic of my 6mm/284 with Pac Nor Super Match Fluted Stainless.

Hmmm, I do like your Savage. What recoil lug did you end up using? Mines a Hollands.

Dogbuster,

My Choate Ultimate Varmint Stock arrived here in New Zealand today, just clearing customs. Hopefully it gets here over the next day or 2 so that I can fit it and go to the range. This will tie in nicely with the Rifle basix trigger I have just had fitted, and that is working superbly. Probably contributed to the below.

Went out to the range today, and shot my best ever group with my 6mm/284. 87gr Hornady V-Max over 56.8 grs H1000, Norma 6.5/284 cases necked down and turned to .265. Bullets sitting .005 off lands. At 125 yards, 3 shots through the same hole. Yet to cronograph the load, but probably around the 3450fps mark. Could go faster with H4350, but as far as I'm concerned accuracy is what kills.

Michael.

Hi everyone - new guy here.

I'm glad to see a post about Pac-Nor barrels as that's probably going to my choice for my next project. I'll be setting up a 6.5x55 Swede using my Savage 110 currently barreled in 30-06 and bedded in a Boyds varmint thumbhole stock. The rifle will be used primarily for paper-punching with an occasional varmint-hunting trip thrown in. I'm quite new to all this, so please be gentle. :)

I've pretty much settled on getting the 1-in-8 twist. Does anyone have any recommendations or comments regarding barrel-length? I have both a 26-inch and a 24-inch currently and don't have a preference either way - am not opposed to 27 or 28 inches if there's an advantage to be had. Based on the little knowledge I have acquired so far, I believe the barrel will be a 3-groove. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to getting the polygonal rifling as opposed to conventional?

Thanks in advance for any help and please feel free to make any additional comments or suggestions.

Rick - Based on my experience with PacNor 6.5 twist .224" 3-groove bbls., I just ordered two 6mm 8-twist 3-groove bbls. from them for 6BR Imp. projects. The 3-gr. bbls. may last a bit longer than 4 or 5-gr. tubes, since the lands are way wide. They do clean up quick & easy. My only custom 6.5x55 bbl. is a Krieger 8-twist std. Palma contour 30" long. It's fairly easy to get 2900fps out of moly'd S142s with it. I'm pretty sure you could get good results with a 8.5 twist, but doubt if there's a big advantage one way or the other.

May i ask you:
How many flutes do you got on your barrel ? 5 or 6.....
Really nice, i just love fluted barrel's

Over the years, I have purchased probably 10 to 12 Pac-nor barrels and I have never had a bad one....I have used Hart, Lilja, Shilen and others.....I like the super match pac nor barrels because they are very accurate, easy to clean and I can always get the exact contour I want....Just ask Penny, lady that answers the phone)......The turn around time is usually short and the price is very competative.....I uaually keep 2 or 3 of their barrels on hand all the time....I have just ordered 2 from them this year and am getting ready to order a 3rd.....Just be sure you know what you want and make sure they understand your instructions.... They are a great company to work with and their barrels are as fine as any anywhere IMO...
