Driving the ranches 2 track to the p-dog area early this AM I ran into a herd of cow elk & calves which promptly trotted off a mile along side of the pastures. I was wondering where if any bulls were, stopped and glassed, saw none. That was pretty nice to see as you would not expect to see them this low, but the hay fields are a calling card.
I popped up and over a hill 3/4 mile and yup there are the bulls, 2 nice giant 5x5 monsters trotting off while I glasses them for 5 min. They were about 1.5 miles from the cows, wondering if they all spent the night grazing and split before I ran into them.
Get into the p-dog spot and see 3 5x5 & 1 6x6 in velvet still mule deer standing looking at me from maybe 300 yards and they just walk off. Yea they know no one hunts them there besides just the rancher.
So into p-dogs and it starts off very slowly for the 1st hour. I maybe ran 20 rounds, then it starts to drip rain all for maybe 6 min, big drops but very sparsely. I look up and of course the only black cloud within sight is above my set up.
I stay and shoot as a few popped up, Light rain really don't keep them down.
Finally as the sun rises above the horizon they come out all over and close ones stay down seeing my set up and bark pretty consistantly. I popped more than a handful with just seeing shoulders above the holes. 99% of all shots today were from 165 to 435 yards. I ran 336 rounds total, moved my set up 3x into different high spots and stopped as I wanted to do some antelope scouting before I left.
Well on the way out a see an Antelope herd across the fields & ponds, yup 8 nice bucks in that group of 23 total. I didn't need binos to see the main bucks horns sticking up into the sky above the rest, looked about 13" + from 400 yards off.
Above the bottom lands, pastures and 5 miles from this spot I come around a corner and see 4 very nice antelope buck laying about 180 yards off the 2 track looking at me as I slow to a stop. The biggest antelope buck Ive ever seen is in that mix & he is just laying there with no worry.
Darn horns were wide as my truck bed, over 15" tall (they just stuck so far up into the sky) with kickers sticking out all nice and white tipped. I want that one come OCT since I have the OK to shoot all I have tags for (2). As I tried to get pics the others stand up and leave, then he does the same, trotting over the hill crest they were on.
The others were wall hangers as well. it looked like a basket ball could fit between his gap. Wide, tall & evenly heart shaped he is.
No p-dog vids today as they all look the same anyway....pftttt....thwapp & splat
