The guys over at graybeardoutdoors put together a p-dog shoot two years running ...Any of you guys care to try to meet up out in Wyoming?? ....Long drive from Ct..but it could be fun to get together & do some blasting....I've been wanting to go west for some time now..it would give me a reason to put the time aside & try to get out there..Any suggestions??? Anyone want to be our Host / guide ?? lets kick this around...mike in ct

Well 3 or 4 of us maybe 5 ...meet in western Pa..rent a motor coach & go from there...sound like a plan???..I'm hot on Wyoming..We can get a rental car/pick up out near the shooting area...lets hear some ideas...mike in ct

Mike,
I have never shot Wyoming, which area do we need to go to?

I shoot dogs in Oregon and Canada every year.

Three friends of mine just returned from South Dakota, just east of Rosebud and they really knocked them out.

Living in Georgia we always fly to Oregon and Calgary, The last two years we have shot the .17 HMR exclusively because we can find ammo easily.

Is Wyoming the hot ticket now???

You want to try to go this year??

I just returned from a shoot in SD as well, the end of June. Nice trip, but the shooting was a bit slow. I'd be interesting in knowing were your buddies went in SD, if you can share that information.

Also, I'd be interested in Wyoming shooting as well, as this is a bit closer to me,Seattle area) than SD.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,
They were in Colome, SD on a private ranch that is owned by one of my friends-friend. They are the only people that can hunt there.

I am thinking about another hunt in September. Tell me about your hunt at Rosebud. Do you think that area could be over hunted?

Chuck:

I was actually a bit north of the Rosebud, in the Presho area, just off I-90. I have posted some pictures of my trip here.

It was a fun trip, but I didn't get all the long-range shooting in that I was after. The three years previously, look at my site for the other trip reports) I was in the Martin area, at the now-defunct LWR Ranch. The shooting that Jon set up was always excellent. It is really unfortunate that they are not in business anymore.

The folks at the Garnos Ranch were first rate, and couldn't have been better hosts. Check them out if you are thinking of that part of the state.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,

That is one very cool looking space gun.

Where do you think the very best area of the country is for shooting PD's?

What is the very best time of year?

We always go in early spring, when there are many pups and the grass is not too high.

Chuck

VERY NICE space gun...What was your light rig ?? 6.5 gets hot & stays that way...I'd like to hear more about a plan ...lets get some ideas out there.....mike in ct

Are you guys going to try to go this year?
Does anyone know of a ranch in Wyoming that can accommodate us?
How long do we plan on staying out there?
Who has shot dogs in Wyoming recently?
Is there a better area for us to try?

hey guys, p-dog shootin where in WY has been great this year. the mild winters we`ve been having has killed off every few and the #`s are up. i live about smack dab in the middle of Wyoming here in Thermopolis. most of the spots i shoot are close to town and really far spread apart, you can find a small town and "clean-up" and then your off to the next one. i`ve killed about 500 so far this year and these small towns are thining out quick but that just means i got to drive further. i only get out to "do it" about three times a month and i started hard on `em about the end of April. i still havent found the mother load of prairie dogs but i`m still looking...One thing you really got to be carefull of is NOT SHOOTING on indian reservation, they will take your guns, truck, left hand...and put you in jail so make sure you know where your shootin! i know there`s lots of dog`s twards Casper and thats the way i`ll be headed next time i go so i`ll keep you posted if i find something real big. i would`nt mind pointing someone in the right direction;)

yup, lots of it. you got to know where your goin. there is 120 miles of it beween me and Casper WY. and i`ve just started to explore that way. from I80 it looks like one big town by Casper!

Chuck:

I can't say what part of the country is best. This year was my fourth trip, and I have only been to SD. I am open to anything, especially if there are locations where I can go for the 1500 yard shot. I'd go back to the LWR Ranch in Martin in a heartbeat, but they just disappeared. Too bad, good people. I also like spring, early June is best) for the same reasons, especially if you are shooting at long range. I like to hit them out in the grass so they can't crawl into a hole if the bullet does a through and through.

Mike:

I used the 6mm-22/250 Ackley a bit, but by far most of my shooting was with my Savage 223 Ackley, using 75 grain AMax. Out to about 600 yards, that thing is very accurate, and bucks the wind much better than the 55 grain bullets. I am in the process of building a 6 Dasher on the tweaked SS M700 action from my,former) 220 Swift Ackley. 30" 5C 8.5 twist Broughton barrel @1.25" no taper, Richards Custom Rifles stock, etc. I expect that to eclipse the 6.5-284 and the 6-250AI out to 1000, and maybe even bump the 223AI from the list for the short stuff. The 6.5-284 is great, but I burn a barrel every season. Oh well, it's only money...

In any case, I am up for another place.
Cheers,
Chris

Come on guys, I know some of you must live close to or have been to some great dog shoots recently... Give us some ideas.

Chuck

That place looks pretty good Chuck, think i just might check it out. I got a friend I work with who goes up that way and shoots every year in MT., he said there`s P-dog towns as far as you can see. sorry for the typo on my last post, it`s not I80 out of Casper WY but HWY.26 that looks good to seek big towns on BLM. I think if someone would be willing to travel 1000+ miles to blast patch poodles something like that place in MT. would be the thing to do. although 200$ could get me a nice hotel and a lot of beer. but what the hell, it would be a cool place to meet some fiends.
