Oven marks on brass: problem?

Time is the other factor. The hotter the brass gets the less time needed to get to the desired state of annealing. 212°F will definitely do some "annealing" of the brass, if. . . it's left at that temperature for a long long time. ;)

Are you sure about that? I read somewhere that the low limit of annealing is more like 450-500F; but it takes a really long time (hours or more.) The practice of using 400 or 450F Tempilaq on the case body was because that temp is low enough to not affect the brass.

I use a food dehydrator for 20 minutes. I also double wash the brass to remove all detergent. I then vigorously shake the residual water out of the cases before I dry them. Not sure what happened to your brass, maybe a reaction with the sheet pan? Shoot them and the marks will come off over time.
David.

What is your cleaning solution mix? Do you use pins?

I have been using a hair dryer for years and dry them fairly well and let them air dry for a day or so just to be sure as I am always way ahead any ways with prepped cases. Since it is only the second firing I would just wipe them down with alcohol and lube and size. You dont have to deep clean brand new cases.I usually wait until the 4 or 5 th firing if they get real stained. By the way stains dont mean anything I am just particular about cleanliness.

Well, I could be wrong about that. I just seem to recall some scientific data (don't remember where, now) about the effects of low heat over time on various brass alloys. At my age, maybe I'm just confusing C° with F°??? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Yarnev I get those marks if I put my brass in the oven with too much water on the outside of the case. I think it’s hard water or something. They’re not a problem. I towel dry the brass really well before I dry them in the oven now, and don’t get the marks. I also rotate them a couple times during drying. As others have indicated, I don’t find that 200+ degrees is necessary. 160 is the lowest my oven goes, and I turn on the convection fan.

Use your tumbler for polishing rocks and buy a vibratory for brass if it’s horrible, I use 0000 steel wool, takes maybe 10 minutes per 100

I will say you can find all this in old posts on this site ????

Hi everyone!
I just started reloading for the first time. I'm doing it for my RPR in 6.5CM. After shooting new brass (Lapua) for the first time I went through the whole process of cleaning it for reloading it a second time. I use a wet tumbler, and then I dried them in the oven on 100C (212F, this was recommended on multiple forum posts) for about 20 minutes. One batch came out mint, but the other has marks running top to bottom, where the cases were touching the oven rack. I can also 'feel' the lines with my fingers. I have attached a picture of one of the cases.

Is this a safety issue? Have I ruined my fancy new Lapua brass? if so, what went actually wrong (oven to high? best never to use oven overall? ...)?

Thanks for thinking along with me!
Kind regards,
Pete
