OT: Investing

My 401K has done nothing but go down the last 5 years, can anyone recommend a source or program to help learn to choose stock and invest more wisely?

Tons of books out there, some good, some bad. If you already have a basic knowledge of stocks or commodities, try the link below

Hope it helps, let me know if I can do more for you.

Generally there is a cycle on investments, some say 7 years some say it is 11 years. Giving advice on investing is more dangerous than giving advice on pet loads. It will depend on where you are at in your retirement plan. If you have more than ten years to go before you retire I would suggest that you stay with what you have, if it has done well in the past, it will come back when the economy gets back on it's feet.

401Ks are for the long haul, Fidelity and Genworth Financial are fairly good plans. Going into the equity, stocks) markets right now could be harmful to your retirement plans if not done carefully. I know of no sure fire system that can give you a better return on your investment.

You need to speak to someone with a series 7 licenses and tell them what your risk tolerance is and what you want by the time you retire. You could rollover your 401K but checkout what the fees might be for doing so, you could lose more than you gain.

I know this is not what you want to hear but it is the best advise at this time.

Good luck

:)

Here's a little retirement info for you:

If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Delta Air
Lines stock one year ago you would have $49.00 left.

With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

But,if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all of the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling REFUND, you would have had $214.00. Based on the above, the best investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

It's called the 401-Keg Plan.

Find your local Edward Jones Investment office and go talk to them.

They are very reputable and will actually care what your investments are doing.

It is much better to hire a professional than try to do it yourself.

They have huge groups of people that all they do is look at one mutual fund to make sure the returns are as good as possible.

If you want a phone number of an office pm me and I will put you in touch with my buddy that is with them and he can help you find someone in your area. I have had an account with them for 4 or so years and it has done very well. We move money around occasionally and it really has done good. Lately in the 20% return range.

Good luck.

Dollar cost averaging, the money you are putting into your 401k is buying more now than it was a year ago. If you have a few years before you retire, this is a good thing.

We have been trained to think wrong. You want to buy all you can while the market is down. The market is a cycle buy when the market is down hedge when the market is high.

Stay the course as Goerge 1st said the ship will right itself soon enough.

Correct, in your retirement saving years a down market is actually a very good thing- as long as you are still putting money in.

Embrace the bear:) As long as time is on your side, it will be way up from here.
