Oryx Chassis/MDT Magazine 6.5 CM Feeding Issues

Hi all,

I just got the Oryx chassis for my Tikka T3x set up. I have an MDT magazine, having hoped to avoid feed issues.

It's a 10-round magazine. Metal. AICS. Without a binder plate. .

The first thing I noticed is that I can't load more than 4 or 5 rounds in the magazine at all. They simply won't seat. It's like it's a 3 round magazine, not 10.

Second thing I noticed is it won't feed correctly. The rounds point angled down the feed ramp. I have to reach in the chamber and physically press the top of the rounds to get them to spring up and be able to feed. I tried adjusting the feed lips, thinking that might be the issue, but it doesn't appear to have helped.

Third thing I noticed is the rounds seem to be a long way away from the feed ramp. They will cycle with the bolt, but it seems like a lot of travel to the feed ramp.

Any experience with this or thoughts on how to correct it? I haven't had an issue like this before. I've really only encountered rounds seated low, and I adjust the feed lips and then they cycle fine.

I attached a video (gif since we can't upload video extensions) that hopefully shows a little of what I'm talking about.

Considering you've already tried adjusting the feed lips with no help, I'm thinking your spring is too weak and possible the follower is binding slightly in the front part of the mag.

You might try taking the mag apart and if possible turn the spring around 180° and see if that makes a difference.

You may need a new follower.

I had a Rem 700 once in 223 that wouldn't feed well. I tried a new spring, no help. Tried old spring with a new follower, no help.

Tried new spring and new follower and it worked perfect.

Till this day I can't see any difference between the combo that worked and didn't work. I finally gave up trying to figure out why and was just happy I finally got it to feed properly.

I cannot help much with your problems, other than to say I have several 5 round, several 10 round, and 1 ten round with the 2 round extension and they all hold the specified rounds with no problem loading them. They are all binderless and yes there is extra travel if you are seating to book COAL, as they are designed to allow holding bullets seated long.

My savage Oryx chassis and their .223 mdt 10rnd poly mags never worked very good. Rounds tipped down, then up and jammed in chamber.
I had feeding magazine problems as the mag was just to fat to fit slick.
Ended up sanding each side until it finally slide into chassis as it should be.
They work good now.
I bought magpro aics poly mags and all issues went away immediately.
They work 200% better than mdt poly mags.

Thank you for the responses so far.

I did take a look at the spring and follower. The follower on the MDT magazine is fixed; the spring is riveted to it, and the magazine is designed so the follower will only insert in one orientation.

I did try to cycle some off the shelf ammo, and that ammo cycled fine. So, it's likely my reloads.

I'm currently shooting once fired factory brass with a COAL of 2.94. The factory ammo's COAL is 2.74. I'm thinking my rounds might be too long for the magazine...? It fed well in my factory Tikka magazine, but that magazine won't fit with the Oryx chassis, at least not without some significant modification to the magazine body.

This is good to know. Thank you.

Did you buy the 7.62 magazine?

My loads are at least 2.940 and longer, no feed issues. I've never tried the MDT plastic, just the metal. I do have a few MagPul and never had great luck with them and that's why I went with the MDT metal and Accuracy Mags. The MDT for me are the best. Well, I did find a use for one of the MagPul 5 rounders, I made a single feed sled that works great and was cheap!

Is your over all length close to max allowed by the magazine? I just had that exact issue and i seated the bullet a bit further in and it took care of it.

MDT binderless is max COAL of 2.960 and I have test fed 2.955" without issue. If he is loading as he said 2.940" length should not be the issue.
