Oregon Rock Chucks Today

Here in central Orygun, most of us wait till at least mid-April or early May in order for the females to give birth, and to give the little ones a chance to grow up. If the females are shot too early, the young'un's will die from lack of nurishment. I really get bummed out when I see a chuck I just shot was either a pregnant or nursing female.

Besides, it promotes more chucks for later in the season. As much as I want to get out right now, I suppress the urge for better shooting later.

Here's one sunning himself late last year just down the road from me:

Just another opinion.

The ones I’m hunting right now are on a farm that the owners asked me to clean everything out thats eating their grain and alfalfa, I hear what your saying about management of the resource and I do that on other places I hunt.

My sagerat trip turned into a nice Chuck hunt. I got these two at 152 yards with my custom CZ 457 in. 17HMR View attachment 1317781
My brother claims, from seeing my father use it on Chucks, that the 17 HMR is just a "yiper" cartridge, that is, Chucks, when hit with the HMR just make a "yipe" noise, then don't die. I guess that you can't go around dispensing "gut wrenching belly wounds" and expect a great kill ratio.

It is easy to tell the females from the males from long distance in the spring. The females will be down off the rocks feeding and the males will me sunning themselves on the south facing rocks.

Well Danny, the rock chucks here would strongly disagree. None of the head-shot chucks shown uttered any "yip" as they were shot. All seemed very quiet except for the "thwack" when the little HMR bullet smacked them in the noggin.

Some local chucks taken with my Anschutz 1715HB 17HMR, none of them 'yipped'.

No gut-shot chucks here. S&G Custom seems to have the same opinion and the skill for head-shooting.
The issue as usual is shot placement, not necessarily the caliber.
Perhaps your dad needs more practice with his 17HMR. Just sayin'.....

One of my favorite little chuck rifles is my Custom Canyon Creek Anschutz 1727 in 17HMR and I’ve killed over 500 chucks with it. Now that being said I shoot allot of chucks with centerfire as well because we do allot of long range hunting in windy conditions in eastern Oregon and southern Idaho.

He's a hack shot, that's the problem.

Yes, used to do a lot of rock chuck and sage rat shooting in the early 70s in Central Oregon with a couple of classics, the old Remington. 222, and sometimes, the then new 25-06 if ya really wanted to destroy them.

I want details on the custom 17 mach 2
The one I was shooting the other day was a CZ 455 Stainless with a Lilja barrel , Masterpiece Arms chassis with a custom CeraKote Paint job , trigger set at 12oz.

Is that a drop in barrel or smithed? I really would like a 17M2

Lilja and Lothar Walther both have drop in barrels for the CZ and they‘ll fit the 455 and the new 457 model , The 457 are awesome and a cut above the older 455 models. The Walther barrels are around $300 and the Lilja’s are way over $400 both shoot about the same , I own both of them in both HM2 and HMR.
