Ordered a Criterion 6BR Barrel with barrel nut conversion for my Rem 700

I have a tactical 308 that I really like. It is kind of my "bipod" shooter (aside from my full bench gun). I just don't like 308 as it cost too much to load and kicks too hard for the accuracy.

I wanted something budget minded so I ordered the Criterion 1-8 Varmint with the barrel nut. I did not want to get a gunsmith involved and always enjoyed doing Ar-15 builds without the need for a machinists. I don't care about the "barrel nut" snobs and it seems like perfectly reasonable way to attach a barrel.

I hope it's a shooter!!!

Been a bitch finding a parallel aftermarket recoil lug though...

PS: Any advise on getting it to repeat would be nice.

I don't know anything about ar-15's so I can't be of any help there but I am curious what brass are you going to use and are you going to get one of those bags that attaches to the rifle so you can catch all your brass, as I assume you will want to reload it?

Well, this a Rem 700.

BUT!!! On a an Ar-15 what you do is cut one coil off the ejector spring. The brass will neatly pile at the ejection port...

All I use for .223 is LC brass. From the groups I get I can't image what Lapua would get me... LC brass is actually pretty dang good.

Your op you mentioned the Ar-15 and I guess I got confused and forgot the title said 700 I have heard of guys using the barrel nut on the 700's with good luck but I can;t think exactly who has done this, I will put my think cap on and try to remember

There's nothing wrong with a barrel nut on a Remmy. My setup is a 26" SS McGowen 6BR Norma 1:8, with a SS Barrel nut and a .250" lug. Sightron 36x SII Big Sky Scope, Shilen Trigger (1.5lb), and Choate Stock.

The action is a bone stock Remington 700 BDL with no truing / accurizing done to it. I did swap out the firing pin for a lightweight one, and put a heavier spring in it.

It's pretty much a range toy and not used for any serious competition (aside from shooting buddies

I shoot it as pictured... off a Rock Mount 6-9" bipod, and using the built in monopod in the rear. Typically off of a bench, but sometimes prone.

The attached targets are from my first trip out with the Berger 105gr Hybrid. Lapua Cases, CCI 450 Primers, and Varget. Weights listed above each 3 shot group, shot round robin, with no cleaning between rounds.

The 80gr Berger Varmint will actually shoot a little tighter at 100 for me, but the 105s are really nice once you get out past 300 yds (my club only goes out to 500 yds).

It may not be quite as accurate as an all out bench gun... but I'm sure this nut is more to blame then the barrel nut!

Stiller has one he says he will sell me. I wanted to get a PTG that has the same profile as the stock one (to fit my recoil lug holding fixture that I use when changing barrels), but everyone is out!!!

Is there any reason not to have your factory lug surface ground?
Personally, I wouldn't worry about how true the lug is unless the action is trued also. You could potentially do more harm than good if the barrel, lug, and receiver mated just right on the factory gun.

I should prob go on record as stating I am neither pro nor anti barrel nut. To me, it's just another means to an end.

I got one from Scott McRee in 260 Rem. It was a kit deal and came with the 1-8tw CBI stainless barrel, barrel wrench, barrel nut, pinned recoil lug, threaded muzzle and thread protector. Easy install, shoots great but haven't worked up a final load yet.

I took the factory barrel off. The receiver threads are filled with red loctite. Anyone know how to get that crap off?

I spun off the 308 barrel last night. Glad I found my torch. Those threads were covered in red Loctite!!!!

Not to mention they probably torque them to 200 ft-lbs. Factory barrel removal was by far the most difficult part of the pre-fit barrel install.

I suggest a lot of heat and a hammer to tap the wrench.
