Optimal Twist Rate for 6.5 Creedmoor

After several months of considering 260 Rem vs 6.5 Creedmoor for my 6.5 build, I've decided to go with the Creed. On reviewing past threads regarding twist rate for 6.5, I've found most of the comments are from 260 Rem shooters probably due to its longer availability and popularity.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the optimal twist for the 6.5 Creedmoor, specifically 24" barrel and 139-142 grain bullets.

Thanks,

Dave

I went with a 8 on my Creedmore for 140 amax's...but based upon what I know other guys are shooting it appears an 8.5 will work. I'm having a 6.5x47 built now and I went with 8.5 but I will most likely shoot 130's out of it the majority of the time.

Your comment echoes what I've heard from other sources - for the the 6.5x47L using 130's, 8.5 is optimal. Presumably that twist works better with the higher velocity with that bullet weight. Using that logic, 8.5 twist might work with the 139-142 bullets but the 8 twist would be more appropriate.

Next topic - how many angels can fit on the head of a pin :)

My gunsmith has been successful with his 6.5x47 and he shoots the 130's and 140's in a 8.5 twist Kreiger.

Good luck...Creedmoor is a great round and the factory match stuff shot just as good as any reload I could develop.

I have experience with 2 6.5 Creedmoor's now and both use 26" barrels. One has a Brux 1-8.5 and the other is an Obermeyer 1-8.4. The Brux loves 140 VLD's. At least to 600 yards (longest range available). The Obermeyer has been more picky with the 140 VLD. Note that the Brux is a 4 groove and the Obermeyer is a 5R.

They will both shoot the 140 Amax well. Who knows what they would do with a 1-8 twist. I would not be afraid to use either the 1-8 or 1-8.5.
