optimal barrel length 223

Is there one??

I think that is one of those ask ten different people and you're likely to get ten different answers kind of questions.

Like many I've 223's with barrel lengths from 16 - 26 inches. I suppose you could say each one was the "optimal barrel length" for that given day and whatever I was using for on that day.

What sort if shooting do you have in mind?

I consider my 5.56 AR15 to be a 300 yard plinking tool and have a 16" barrel on it. For my intended use, that is sufficient.

Yes.

For long range varmint hunting or strictly range shooting, I like a heavy contour 24 to 26" barrel. It's a pain to carry but the weight helps stabilize the rifle on the sticks for long range shots. I have four, an old Rem 700, Re-barreled Rem 700 with a Douglas match barrel, and a Weatherby Super Varmint Master, and a Tikka Varmint. All are 1/2 to sub 1/2 moa rifle with tuned reloads. The Tikka is strictly a range practice rifle.

For stalking, I like the Remington Model 7 with a 20" barrel after market Douglas No. 2 contour barrel. I am fairly consistent with these out to about 225 yards off the sticks.

Perhaps the best compromise that I have is a Browning A Bolt Varmint Stalker, 24" semi-heavy, No. 3 contour barrel. This rifle is relatively easy to carry and is extremely accurate. I have taken a lot of hogs with this rifle and a fair share of predators.

Just shortened my Tikka T3 Light barrel from 22" to 18". Running my 6" suppressor is much more pleasant now. Accuracy is very good. Under 1/2" at 100yds from the bipod laying in the dirt . Love this rifle!

How much velocity did you lose Paul? I’ve been thunking about the same thing for the same reason, to run a can.

Thanks in advance.

I have several 223s, 4 bolts actions with barrel lengths 20-24”, 6 ARs with berrel lengths of 12, 16, 20”. All of those rifles can handle 300 yards comfortably with 55-77gr bullets. That’s my experience. Just make sure you get the twist right for the bullet weight you want to shoot or a do a 1-7 or 1-8 and shoot whatever you want.

Sean,
Not sure as literally finalized the load this am!! Lol. 62 Eld-VT is going to be a coyote thumping machine. Will get a speed reading today hopefully.

Alf, not to bad considering how much easier it is to handle in the field. Especially if running a suppressor.

Exactly why it went in for surgery...

My 223 "tactical" rifle with 22" barrel is death on steel targets out to 600yd, very good out to 900yd, but dropped off significantly at 1000yd. But for higher precision like Ftr I go for 28"-30".
