opioins on 6xc

I,m thinking about building a 6xc on a sleeved 700 action. I'm shooting 600yds out to a 1000yds. Don't know much about this cartridge was wondering about accuracy. thanks for all help.

Accuracy.. hummmm.. lets see. At Camp Perry, in the long range national championships, you shoot a course of fire that is for a total of 1450 points and 145 X's, so David Tubb in 2004 shooting the 6XC with 115's shot a 1450-101x for a national record that will prob stand for a very long time.

More info on the 6XC: http://www.6mmbr.com/6XC.html

Here is the article where Tubb made the record: http://www.nra.org/Article.aspx?id=788

German Salazar has been shooting the 6XC with 115gr bullets,Bergers I believe) with great success out to 1000. He likes the combo so much he's sold his 6.5-284 rifle and all his loading stuff for the bigger caliber.

The Norma brass is good and Tubb's die system is excellent.

FWIW, the 6XC won the most recent 300m team CISM championship--the first time anything has beaten the 6BR in many years.

Yes that is true.. but just remember that barrel life is half what the 6XC is when shooting the .243.

I am not sure there really are "downsides" for the 6XC. Well, maybe bbl life, if your used to shooting a 223 or 308! I have fired about 15,000 rounds of 6XC over the last couple of years and havent really found a negative. My bbls get an easy 2,000 rounds, most get upwards of 3000 before I move them to strickly offhand and rapid fire use,I am a HP shooter, not a BR or something like that kinda guy).

Powder choices are excellent. Cases, just use Winchester 22-250 as they last 20 plus firings and you never have to trim them, necks wont ever grow enough to have to trim). Bullets...well, 6mm bullets are out there for about anything you want to shoot.

Velocity....is 3000+ with a 115 enough for you? I certainly hope so.

Accuracy.....I cant out shoot the round. And about any decent load will work just fine. Shoot, all my 300 yard and less ammo is loaded on a Dillon 650!

For 600-1000 work, you will single stage your ammo, probably use 105-115s and H4350 or V100. Easy. If you outshoot that combo, gripe at your gunsmith! ;)

The 6XC is a great long-range cartridge, it needs no excuses and can hold its own against any other LR cartridge.

I prefer to use Norma 6XC brass, but 22-250 can be formed by firing after running through the FL die. It will look pretty nasty at first, but it will shoot just fine even fire-forming. If you have a copy of the May 2007 Precision Shooting, my article on the 6XC is in there and shows quite a bit of this.

I principally use the 6XC for 1000 yard prone shooting, sometimes at 600). The main bullet I use is the Berger 115 VLD,1:7.5" twist x 30" Krieger) and the best powder I've found for that is H4831sc. Velocity is in the 3000 fps range. I haven't pressure tested this combination so I'm reluctant to publish exact loads, sorry.

Whether the 6XC is ideal for any given person depends on a lot of factors. I tend to shoot fast and keep the rifle in my shoulder. Accordingly, a low recoil cartridge suits me because it doesn't require any repositioning of the rifle or rebuilding of position during a 22 shot string. I know how to read wind, so whether a cartridge drifts a few inches more or less than another isn't really a concern to me, I learn the cartridge's behaviour and work with what I've got. The 6XC shines because it is ACCURATE at 1000 yards and without that, you've got nothing.

Accuracy, low recoil, reasonable wind drift, good component availability, decent barrel life, what else is there to want in a long-range cartridge?

Can i just put a 22-250 case through a 6xc die and fireform?

Yes. Which is why I use Winchester 22-250 brass rather than any of the Tubb or Norma offerings...they are just too soft for my liking. With the Win, I know what I am dealing with and know I will get at least 20 firings out of it, on average. And, I never have to trim it...while I have a Giruad, I would just as soon not do it. And, I havent noticed any accuracy issues either...my last trip to the 1000 yard line with the 6XC netted a 200-8x with sighters and finishing out the box after the string of a total of one 9, the first shot, the other 28 were clean, including the string. 115VLDs over a stout charge of H4350....3030fps. That brass had 5 firings on it.

Contrary to what German has found, I cant get the 4831sc to get me the velocity that the H4350 can.....I have actually only found 2 powders that will give me more speed than the H4350 will.

I would agree with German, the 6XC will definitely hold its own and I am not sure that my 6.5x284 running 142s at 2950fps actually drifts much less than the 115VLDs,I dont waste my time with the other 115s).

After my recent experiences with Norma brass, I'm also of the opinion it's really to soft for me. It seems as though 6-6.5X47 is a close cousin to the 6XC, is there enough data on it to compare the two? At least you can use Lapua brass.

Mike, Peter Ch. uses the 6mm x 6.5x47 and we seem to shoot very similar scores when we shoot them side by side. I'd say there's not enough difference to worry about between them. As for the Norma brass, the 6XC brass has held up very well for me. The 6BR Norma brass tends to get loose in the primer pockets but in my experience, the loose pockets don't leak or cause problems. I've taken the 6BR brass to 20 loads and once past 3 or 4 the pockets don't seem to get any looser. The 6XC Norma brass keeps the pockets tight,at least through 8 loads which is where I am with it now).

I Have both a 6X47 Lapua and a 6XC and both are dead equal in terms of accuracy.,I just shot my best 600M match ever with a 6X47)

The disadvantage with the XC is the lack of Lapua brass and the larger flash hole. I have Tubb and Norma brass and my preference is the Norma. The disadvantage with the 6X47 is Lapua brass is the only choice and frankly some of the Lapua 6.5X47 parent cases have been crappy, quite surprising!)

I found the XC very easy to load for, the 6X47 caused me to invent a whole new phrase book of profanity until I discovered N560.

For reasons I cannot possibly logically explain, I prefer the 6X47L.
