Opinions on Vortex Golden Eagle

I totally agree that the scope you’re asking about would work BUT my opinion is that it is over kill. A Weaver 36x or Leupold especially used would save you a TON of money and work just fine.

I have 2 GE and I like them. However, I agree they are overkill for your purpose. A used Leupold Competition would serve, you well. I have several of those also, both near 20 yrs old. They are the only scopes I own I have never needed to send back for a problem. Early GE had incorrect grease for cold Temps, I sent first one back, less than 1 week turnaround, they called and told me the fix.Great service from Vortex. Did the second one myself with Mobil One Synthetic grease.

If you have the $$$ they're an awesome scope. Definitely a step or two above the SIII's. Guys please don't shoot me for saying this, but I've owned NF's and felt they were overpriced for what you get.

May I please have your thoughts.

Just because you get it for 100 yard 22 lr, doens't mean that is the final resting spot. I look for good buys on used scopes I like, and can buy them, use them, and sell them for what I paid for them. If you take care of it, should give you all the service you could ask for.

I will be using it for 100 yard shooting with a 22lr. May I please have your thoughts. Thanks.

In addition to the above thoughts; I was a lifelong Leupold user until 2009 or so until I looked through a friend's Nightforce BR 12X42 which, apparently, was a gateway drug. Soon got my own BR model, quickly progressed to NXS 12X42s, then several 15X55s which I still own and use for F-Class. Recently got a Vortex GE 15X60 after looking through 5 or 6 at matches and couldn't believe they were as good as they seemed.

Haven't shot it in a 1,000 yard match yet, but playing with it and putting it through it paces at my local range, it continues to impress with its value, clarity, repeatability, and resolution. I will be, at the least, using it for upcoming rimfire F-class matches and I can see trying it at 1,000 matches later this year. I see more and more of them on the firing line at Tullahoma these days.

I would buy another Sightron SIII 8-32x or 10-50x before I would buy another GE. Overall the GE is a fine scope, but it is more expensive, it gets dim approaching max power and I think the eyebox is overly critical. I do like the smaller objective over the SIII scopes 56 and 60mm though, and might be what accounts for the dim at high power factor.

Euro Optics has the NF 42x Competition fine crosshair on close out right now for $1,149 if you are okay with a fixed power scope. I don't think you would lose any money at that price if you decided to sell in a year or two.

I put a used NF 12-42x56 BR scope on a .22 rimfire rifle I had "accurized" for use as an F-TR practice rifle and rimfire BR play gun. These are often available in the For Sale section for around $1K and might be another option to consider. The only issue with the scope is the limited turret adjustments. I didn't put a 20 MOA canted scope rail on the rifle and the 12-42BR doesn't have as much internal elevation/windage adjustment as some of the newer, higher magnification (55-60X) scopes currently available such as the Vortex GE or the NF Competition. So my maximum realistic shooting range is limited to about 150 yd. Nonetheless, the glass on the GE is quite good, and it is a lot of scope for the price.

I would suggest actually looking through someone's GE before purchasing, if at all possible. Both the NF Competition DDR-2 and Vortex GE ECR-1 reticles have a .095 MOA aiming dot and pretty fine stadia (@40x mag), which I find are simply too small and hard to see for my eyes. The older NF BR and NXS scope designs have slightly heavier reticle stadia/dots, and I find them a little easier to use. Only your eyes can tell whether you will like a given reticle or not, so actually looking through one is always the best bet whenever possible.
