opinions on my build

I am having a rifle built with these components... surgeon RSR action / Bartlein heavy vmt. bbl 1in 8 twist / Timney trigger / HS precision silhouette stock. chambered in .223 AI.This is my first custom. It is not due back from the smith till April, and I would like some feedback on either the whole package or pros and cons of individual parts. Also I would like to hear some of your pet loads for this cartridge if you would. Thanks in advance. Bubba

I will give you my opinion, sounds like you have one heck of a rig coming together!

I do have a few questions: How long is the barrel? What do you plan on using the rifle for?

Knowing a bit more about your planned usage will help others tell you what issues you may or may not have.

But it sounds like it's going to be one heck of a first custom!

I have no personal experience with the Surgeon Action or Bartlein Barrel , but have only heard positive comments on both . HS Precision redid a used Winchester Stock I needed to be touched up ( I asked them to send me a small amount of touch-up material ) , and they did a terrific job of refinishing the whole Stock .....super Customer Service ! I have had Timney triggers which came with two used Rem 700s , and both were awful . I did'nt install them ( don't know their History ) and neither could be adjusted to anything near acceptable . I much prefer an " old " 700 adjusted Factory Trigger . I hope you have better luck with a new Timney , and would be interested in your final results .

The lemgth of the tube willbe 26 in.as far as intended uses I will be doing every thing from paper punching to vmt humting to maby trying my hand at F class

As others have already stated have a Jewell installed you'll be much happier, remember a rifle will shot so much better with a consistent trigger and the Timney just dosen't measue up.

Sounds like you have one heck of a rig being put together! 223ai is a great round as well. I built one on a rem 700 action and set it up to shoot the 75 grain amax and its a hammer on groundhogs. I've also shot out to half of a mile with it and and could consistenly hit an 8 inch metal gong with it just had to be on point with the wind. Try running some varget outta it I know my rig loves it just had to shoot a compressed load to git it to shoot. If you have any questions or want some more load info feel free to pm me.

I agree with the shilen trigger.Every bit as good as a jewell now that the production line has been upgraded. The surgeon action you have is nice no question but if you had to buy there picatinny rail that puts that action over 1000 bucks. I think there are better actions to be had for 1000 bucks. But really nothing wrong with the little surgeon action at all. I had one. i thought they were a bit loose for target shooting but hey it did shoot just fine! Why the long wait time? That would drive me crazy!! Sounds like you will have something to be very proud of and thats what counts!! Enjoy and lets see some pics when its all done. better yet lets see some groups with those pics. Enjoy! Lee
