Opinions/Advice on Stiller Predator or Surgeon RSR

Hi - I am thinking about a hunting rifle in 6.5x47 Lapua. Does anyone have any opinions or advice on either the Stiller Predator or Surgeon RSR actions?
For the rest I plan to go with a Jewell HVR trigger and an oil finished Shehane obeche laminated stock with a blind magazine...
Any thoughts or should I be considering other actions as well? I am in the UK so have to factor in import availability and I know the Predator is available and the Surgeon should also be (through Brownells if not carried by an importer).
Thanks

I have a hunting rifle built on a single-shot Predator and like it very much. Never had a Surgeon.

To your list of actions to consider I would add the new Kelbly Atlas.

I've used both and actually have one of each in the shop right now. Both are very nice and very well made. The fluting on the Stiller bolt is deeper. Either will work well. Another in teh same price range to consider is the Big Horn receiver.

Dont think you could go wrong with either. With that said I would go with Surgeon based on the customer service I have recieved from them, in fact I am saving my allowance for one. Customer service and recognition go a long ways in my book.

they both make top notch receivers. although i dont have a surgeon, i have read tons about them and can highly recommend them. as for stiller--i have a predator short action single shot--beautiful receiver and the craftsmanship is top notch as well

You can't go wrong with either. I have built on Predator actions and they are top notch for hunting/tactical type builds. I have a Surgeon RSR on my desk in front of me as we speak and it is impressive for the money. I do like the larger base screws and the solid integral bolt handle of the RSR. I am building a 6.5x47L on the RSR this weekend. SR

Oh - and as far as customer service goes, Jerry and Curtis at Stiller, and Preston or Kay at Surgeon are all first class. Again, this is a Chevy vs Ford debate/decision. SR

Chevy and Ford wish they built stuff this good ;D.

I'm in the same boat, looking at all the 700 style aftermarket receivers. and so far it's looking like a toss up between the Stiller and Surgeon. Life sure is rough when that's the toughest decision you have to make.

love them both but my money always ends up at surgeon. once you have one in your hands and see how nicely the rail fits the receiver, you know the rest of it has to be dead nutz perfect. they say it only costs a few more dollars to go first class. i think the BAT VR (reminton clone) is a touch better than either listed but it is very tight and may not be best for a down and dirty hunting rig.

Re: Opinions/Advice on Custom Actions

You have many great choices:

Kelbly, Stiller, Pierce, Surgeon, Borden and the list goes on.

I have had good service from them all.

Over the last year I have taken delivery on about 10 Stiller Predators. All have been delivered with in weeks of order. Jerry and Curtis have always delivered a great product.

Jim Kelbly makes a fine action also and delivers when he says he will. Kelblys customer support has always been great.

John Pierce makes a fine action and delivers with in weeks of when he says. John is great with customer support.

Jim Borden makes a fine action, and gives great service also.

The custom gun builder is blessed with quality products to work with here in America. We are also blessed with accessory vendors like PT&G, Wyatt Outdoors who make fine botom metal and mag boxes.

Good Luck with your build

I also have had both. The surgeon was a piece of art for sure. Like mentioned above, the top rail being pinned is a big plus. The machine work on the back of the bolt shroud was also very impressive. My only dislike , if you will, with the surgeon was the fact that the bolt was really loose, and lock up to me didnt feel any different than a rem 700. I later learned, that surgeon makes an action with tighter tolerances, if thats what you need. Surgeon designs there round action to work in any situation, whether it be in the sand box, or at the range. I think my total price was right at 1050 with 20 moa rail.
Stiller predator. I have four of them, and i feel they are the best action for the money in the rem 700 clone class. The bolt feels nice, not near as much play as my surgeon. I really like the coating stiller applies to there predator action as well. I really love how well these action eject the small BR cases. I had to cut a couple springs loops off my exector spring, because the way they come from the factory, your brass ends up in the next county. Some folks may not care as much about this as myself, but, i have had a bad experience with another leading custom action manufacturer, and positive ejection is a must for me. The lock up on my predator action has that what i call " custom feel" to them. Very nice. Fluted firing pin,and fluted bolt bodies look very nice on the stiller. I am not sure what that means in real life, but like i said it looks nice, and it's just another step stiller is willing to take with there action for us.
Now what i dont like about the stiller predator actions. I think the bolt handles need to be welded on, instead of the sodering them, they way they currently are. I have also had a couple issues with there recoil lugs not being straight. The problem was always taken care of in a speedy order. I have only had dealings with Curtis but he has treated me more than fair. I once bought a tac-30 single shot that was brand new, from a private seller simply because the price was to good to pass on. I called Curtis and he traded me straight up for the action i wanted, and even shipped it to me on his dime. Actually i have done this twice.
Bottom line is that i feel both action are wonderful pieces of work. I dont think you can go wrong with either one. The stiller is about 200 less money, and i do not feel this action is 200 less in quality, so my money goes to stiller, every time. Please take what i have to say for what it is worth. This is my experience only!! Lee

I have had great luck with my Stiller Predator, I bought one of the early ones and it has served me well and will continue to I am sure. I will be ordering another on with the SnipersHide GB.

I can't say much more on these post , THEY ARE RIGHT ON'
One thing If you want the tightest action look at the Borden.
I handled the proto type and boy was it slick.
Just enough clearance for oil.

Thank you all for the great responses - they certainly give me confidence! I am leaning towards the Stiller but will let you know what I end up with!
Happy New Year to everyone.
