i got a guy who wants two rifles built. rem S/A 6.5 and 7mm. does not care what cartridge just so they shoot.
6.5 will be eastern deer rifle and the 7mm will be co. mule deer. if i build 7-08 and a 260 we have two similar cartridges. what are your thoughts on 6.5x47L and 284 win? shots will be under 100yds. for the 6.5 and out to 250yds. for the 284 .

This might sound silly, but I personally believe that hunting rifles should be common calibers *or* an AI of a common caliber. I've never went without my ammunition - OK almost never!

So the question for me is, what is the most accurate 6.5 and 7mm caliber that I can buy ammo at the sporting goods store?

As boring as it sounds, my first thoughts were 260 Rem and 7mm-08.

Both will get the assigned jobs done, with room to spare, in a very simple and straightforward manner.

I would build a caliber that I could go to most sporting goods stores and by ammunition. Nothing can ruen a hunt faster then having ammunition problems. Larry

Forgot the s/a on my second post. Ill go back to the original- 6.5x47 and 284. Why go with 6.5 why not a 6? Go 243 and 7-08. At least with the 243 shells are at any walmart.

Best advice yet.

The smaller round was destined for eastern whitetails at close range in the original post. Ain't a buck walking that can't be cleanly taken with the 243 Win.

If playing strictly with the outlined criteria, I still say 260 and 7mm-08.

If allowed a little flexibility, getting a bit more separation with the 243 and 7mm-08 is even better.

simple things are sometimes overlooked like buying ammo. he is a hand loader but i have had guys show up at their camp and the luggage landed in East Jabip . What about 7-08 ack. improved ? if the ammo does not show up you can still shoot factory ammo.there are a lot of good short action cartridges out there. but he gave me 6.5 and 7mm barrels with short actions.the 260 i can let standard for eastern whitetail . i thought about 7 saum but that ammo is sometimes as hard to find as hens teeth. thanks for all the input members .

I would do a 6.5x47. Great accuracy, good brass and barrel life. For the 7MM I would do a 7-08 Ackley. It is about the most horsepower and ballistics you can get out of the short action. It would make a good hunting gun especially if you throw in elk. Matt

I like the .243 and .308 chamberings,,,,both accurate,,,good for deer sized game and ammo easily available at wal-mart ,,,or roll your own,,,Roger

If he wants a 6.5 and a 7mm on a Rem. short action, the only two that fit without cramming bullets in the case are a 47L (true s/a) and 7-08. With that said for shots out to only 250 yards two rifles seems like a waste, but what the heck if he wants two build him two.

Either will get the job done with plenty to spare, along with a bunch of other cals and cartridges.

well thanks for all the input on this post i think all the thoughts were well founded . for various reasons we have decided on 6.5L and the 7-08.
thanks to everyone for your ideas and i have made note of them all . mike

I hate to go in this direction, but with so many favoring local ammo availability, I'll try it.

Take a ride down to your Local Wal-Mart and look in the locked ammo cabinet. That will give you a no-doubts example of what's likely to be locally available. Choose accordingly.

I don't understand why everybody worries about ammo. I can guarantee if I am going on a hunting trip I will have enough quality ammo along. Matt

Ill second that- ive been all over the world hunting and ive never been to a store in johannesburg looking for 280ack ammo. Luckily i had ammo for my 375 h&h in newfoundland cause i woulda had to borrow my guides 303 british had i not.

Local availability of ammo is a myth. Try to get quality factory loads in .260, 7-08 etc. Anything you find will likely be inferior to what you planned to use. Get a .270 or 30-06 and walk away with factory ammo. Best to be sure your loads arrive with you. Bill
