Opening up a Winchester boltface?

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
How involved would it be to open the boltface on a modern control feed (or a Pre-64 if one stumbled on an action) 30-06 to make it into a 300WSM?

This is one of those kind of maybe one day I might ... kind of questions. I haven't looked to far into it but I think that all the Mod70s factory chambered in 300WSM are short actions, so the idea is to get a long action M70 in WSM.

I'm probably just bored, and I have a M70 300WM. I saw an action for sale recently. It's just one of those what if I did this ideas.

The idea (granted with out much thought) was to do a controlled feed Winchester. If the action was push feed could do it with a Remington-ish type action instead of a Winchester.

Just get a M70 Classic in 7 Rem Mag, 300 Win or 338 Win Mag or any other standard magnum and your ready for a re barrel. But if you want to use a .473” bolt face and open it up, it’s not hard. Open the bolt face and re grind the extractor hook or just buy a magnum extractor.

It was just a thought that occurred to me when I saw a Pre-64 action for sale over on GunBroker. That one is/was a generic .473 probably was an -06 at some point in it's life. As I wrote in the OP, not something I'm planning today but thoughts for another bored winter project.

I have a pre 64 bolt I had opened up for 300 win mag I'd trade for a .308 bolt face if you ever do your project.

I come across more standard bolt face CRF M-70s than magnums so I have wondered about this too. I am a newbie lathe owner but well before I had my lathe I would shorten the bolt stop, ejector, and remove the magazine spacer to get a better magazine length for 300 Wins and 338 Wins.

So I take it to open up the bolt face, all I have to do is indicate the bolt in with my Viper fixture and increase the inner diameter of the bolt face to clear a .532 rim?

BTW, I may be like the OP. As much as I like my BATs for LR BR, push feed and big game rifle don’t usually go together......... ;)
