on line Wildcat/cartridge conversion, reference material?

a very long time ago I had a large book that listed wildcat dimensions and how to form them, it also had how to convert conventional calibers to another conventional caliber. the book is long gone, but I was thinking there is surely an online reference somewhere?

thanks

I have not seen an online version of any such information.

I found The Handloaders Guide For Cartridge Conversion from Olley's a couple years ago for $6.99.

But it doesn't have some of the rounds that i'm interested in. Aka, not up to date.

I don’t know a lot of the new ones

Howdy !

A lot of wildcatting is performed to arrive @ a fairly specific case capacity goal, and also to sometimes achieve specific case’ shaping.

I think you would be best served by reading up on rifle’ “ Expansion Ratio”.

Reknowned 20th Century ballistician Homer Powley has told us one method to use when comparing the relative efficiency of various cartridges is by calculating each rifle’s “ Expansion Ratio “.

Using expansion ratio for comparing various potential rifle chamberings can help the shooter determine whether their needs can be met by use of an exisiting known chambering ( wildcat or factory ). And of course,to help better define what potential wildcat configuration & capacity might be more desirable to meet particular shooting goals.

Homer published a guide book for operating his “Powley Computer”, and it is a wealth of useful knowledge gleaned from the ballistics Master.
On-line versions of the Powley Computer are available for use, and are a helpful tool one can use when wanting to plug & chug different case capacities/powder charges.... and see what the results say.

There’s a lot to try and wrap one’s head around, and Homer did a superb job of making internal ballistics more understandable for the layman.

One other font of knowledge I often recommend is:
“ The Powley’ Papers “, as they were published in the
“ Guns & Ammo 1974 Annual “. I bought a copy from an on-line source for $14, and it is worth every penny, even if just for the included Expansion Ratio charts and graph.

The new wave computerized cartridge design utilities are all fine and good, but remind me of a 5th grader being allowed to use a calculator when taking a math test. He can come-up w/ and answer sure, but..... does he understand how and why that answer was reached ?

But hey.... that’s just me.

Howdy, again !

Oooos.... I forgot to mention another great source of info:

P.O. Ackley’s 2 volumne treatise “ Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders “ is a superb source of info, including on wildcats.

Ackley educates us about things like “ ideal case capacity “ and
“ ideal bore capacity “; and much more !
