Why not buy a Savage target action?
i didnt think anyone made one either. that savage tang isnt optimal for bedding. I converted a savage stock to a Rem 783 once. My suggestion after that-- sell them and get a stock with footprint you want. Can one order a custom action with a Savage foot print?
Reason being I have 2 McMillan " Edge" stocks with the Savage inletting and would like to not have to buy another.
why did you want to switchOh well it was a shot in the dark. I guess I'll just continue on with my crappy Savages.![]()
I guess I was lucky-- After 1 Savage I decided they were not for me. It wasnt even a Target action so it wasnt expensive to start with. i did buy an aftermarket stock and Shilen barrel for it but im using them on another gun now.Well not because of accuracy. I have a new 6mm barrel coming and thought maybe a smoother action would be nice, my PTA is timed and trued with an installed lift kit but it still isn't even close to my Panda when it comes to smoothness. Plus I can't get the trigger below 7oz. and I have kinda got used to the 1.5 oz. on the Panda and my other Savage with the 2oz. SSS trigger.
Before anyone says try the new Jard, I've been told they won't go down to competition weight reliably with out some modification and at close to $300 that shouldn't be the case. What I spent on this PTA so far would have paid for a custom when I started this venture but hard headedness and ease of working on it myself guided my decision.
thanks for the explanation froggy. if i just wanted a factory rifle to shoot and never take apart i mite well buy a savageHoz, don't get me wrong I still have a bunch of Savages that were bought for hunting and just plinking at the range and they are damn near perfect for that, all but one are .5 or better with a lot of load work up.
I have a model 12 single shot that was all done up for BR. and it is as smooth as anything and in the right hands would hold it's own against almost anything. Now the target action on the other hand I thought after all the extra work would be the same or at least close to it. No way no how that is the only reason I would send it on it's way. I guess I will stick to my original plan and just put the new 6mm barrel on it, develop a load for it and then use as a just in case gun, when something goes wrong at a match.
I also shoot a Stole for my hunter class and that is the only true custom I have.( at this moment)
