A customer of mine who will remain in anonymity, sent me his scale that I had worked on some years back. He complained that it wasn’t reading consistently. I talked with him for a bit over the phone to diagnose and troubleshoot. He ended up sending me the scale to look at. See the pic below. Note the layer of fine whitish dust all over the scale body. Dust is the mortal enemy of precision analog instruments, scales included. I cleaned the scale, made a few small adjustments to the beam and pan carrier. It now repeats and is spot on again.
Even if you do allow it to collect dust, I will make it right again. The warranty stands.
Scale Instructions:
Use the check weight value to set the level of the scale. Test this a few times for repeatability. Adjust your powder thrower to throw about 1/2 grain less than your desired charge weight. Trickle up to the mark each time. If you go past it, dump it back into the hopper and throw a new charge. This will deliver the most consistent charges. When not in use, remove beam from scale and keep dust off of it. Never use lube on the bearings or pivot knives.
