old school 3rd edition sierra or newer lyman 48th

i purchased a sierra manual 3rd edition end of 80's or early 90's. and a few years back, i got myself an lyman 48th eddition load book. i got a sweetspot for my marlin 1895ss 45/70 back in the day with the sierra and it's proved itself for many years. lately, those that reload keeps an ear as to whats going on in the realm. so, i purchased the lyman book 48 idition and tried it out. my 300 gr sierras were punching mud short of the target. i needed a ladder to raise the rounds. lyman loads were spuds. grinding dirt, way short of my target zone. what happened to our shooting industry the past 30 years? did we dumb down? not trying to scare the noobies.... but what the fuss?

Loading manuals are a reference point and Sierra is known to be on the hot side over alot of the rest of the manuals out their... Sierra is working on putting out an updated version right now according to them and that would be nice... Another is the data from Ramshot for example their data for TAC powder is in the realm of WOW , that's alot higher to me when compared to other manuals...

Even though you start low and work up , there's times even myself , which I consider a conservative reloader who isn't looking for a screaming hot round which normally isn't an accurate round finds a load which is above max charge in one manual but not in another , especially if your loading say plinking .223 rounds for the AR platform with a 5.56 chamber...

For instance I know reloaders who don't feel comfortable loading much higher than the low range of the scale , they don't care about speed because they don't own a crono and don't shoot over a hundred yards.... They can't figure out why their loads are not accurate and probably never will but they enjoy going out and banging a few hundred rounds out on weekends... They say spending the time like we do to make extremely accurate ammo is a waste of time , to each their own but this is why manuals are so conservative , they simply can't chance it... I check about 3 different manuals before reloading a new cartridge...

I have personally seen middle of the charge scale data push a bullet as fast as factory ammo because they founded their data on a 20 inch barrel in a different part of the country or even world than me and I was using a 24 inch barrel in a warmer climate than them etc... What would have happened if I would have just loaded a max or close to max charge , it probably wouldn't have blown the gun up but it wouldn't have been good either , AND that manual is more conservative than other manuals I have. They can't take all the factors into play for everything such as heat , cold , barrels , altitudes , etc etc etc... And the main ones , un experienced reloaders or plain ol stupid people....

Looking at my Ideal Hand Book for Reloading Ammunition, Seventh addition, no 36 published 1949 by the Lymann Guns Site Corp. By far the most common bullet is a lead cast, and the Ideal no. 457193 405 grain bullet is described as the most successful bullet for 45-70 450 Marlin chambered barrels in "fast twist" 1/22 or faster. 31 grains of Lightening delivered 1440 fps.

My 1951 Volume 2 of Reloading Information from the American Rifleman magazine, especially prepared by Lymann Gun Sight Corp. and published by the National Rifle Association of America lists loads for the model 1886 Winchester. One load listed is for the 405 gr Rem SP, is 53 grains of 3031, making 1827 fps and 28,993 psi.

The 1955 Ideal No. 40 book list popular powders for the 45-70, some of which are footnoted for 1886 Win rifles only and recommending Fg powder whenever possible. The popular smokeless powders are: 2400, 4227, 4759, 4198, Hi-Vel, 4895, 3031, 4064, 4320, 4350, Unique.

For the 1886 Win, it is suggested to fill the case to the bottom of the bullet by using 7 or 8 grains of 4759 in the bottom of the case and filling out the rest with Fg black powder. Listed as being accurate and requires no cleaning during shooting period.
