Old savage 223 stager feed needs new barrel

So I’ve got a savage 10 heavy barrel in a McMillan stock
Need to replace barrel want to keep it a 223 and I have a surplus of 69 gr smk’s
Don’t turn necks but use lapua brass
Thinking 1/7 the stock 1/9 shot 60gr the best 69 not well at all
Have bought a couple of complete rifles from NSS and was completely satisfied probably give him back the business but just want to check the air and see wig there are any suggestions
Appreciate the input

If just 69gn I'd go with 1:8. That would also be good for 77gn. Talk to Jim when you order cause you probably want something like a Wylde throat (Savage throats seem to be longer than SAAMI .223). I got a 6BR Shilen barrel for my model 12 from him.

FWIW, my Axis (22" 1:9) shot 77gn SMK's the best, along with 73gn Bergers and ELDs.

Me? I went all in and got a long throat with 1:7 for shooting 90gn :)

I’d definitely do the 1-8 or 1-7 over the 1-9.
1-8 with the 69smk is a good combination.
Get a NSS barrel with the wylde chamber, it seems to always play well with 69SMK

Northland and a Shilen barrel is a excellent choice. We built 4 Savage Rifles using their components and all have been great shooters. Good luck with your choice of twist.

If you wanted a sporter weight I'd go NSS but for a heavy barrel Urbanrifleman, I just put an Urbanrifleman 223 AI barrel on my stagger feed Savage and it is a great barrel

No kidding, my standard 8 twist 223 Wylde shoots the 69 smk so well it is almost shocking. Those things will shoot small.

I highly recommend NSS and Savage Pre-fit Shilen Select Match barrels.
The Select barrels are slightly more expensive than the Shilen Match versions, but the bore is guaranteed to be consistent down the entire barrel.

I have had great results with a Shilen Select Match 1:7 twist in .223 and just passed 1680 rounds through the barrel.
It shoots 69 gr SMKs great and also shoots 80 and 90 SMK and Berger bullets great.
In fact, it shoots just about anything I have loaded way better than l had ever shot with the factory barrel.
Turns out that it shoots 73 gr and 75 gr ELD-Ms and Berger bullets better than anything else I have tried.
I don't think there is any loss in accuracy with 1:7 for bullets from 69 to 73 from the faster twist.
The advantage is that you can also shoot 80 to 90 grain bullets, just as accurately.

Just got a Shilen Select Match barrel for my 6.5mm CM and initial results are also great.

Jim a NSS is really very helpful and really knows his products. He provided some really helpful suggestions.
